When the People are the Source of Dictatorship

It's certainly a negative thing to have a totalitarian regime that oppresses its people. It's even worse to have a society in which the people themselves oppress their fellow citizens if they choose to have opinions that contradicts to what the majority believes in. But it is definitely a disaster to have both, because it seems that you can't fix one you without fixing the other, and at the same time it is almost impossible to fix both simultaneously.

I read two news articles recently that show how the people in Egypt oppress their fellow citizens, or even think they don't have the right to be citizens, just because they choose to be different than the rest of the herd.

The first article talks about 2000 Egyptian citizens (it seems they all happen to be men) who in the past have traveled to work in Israel and over there they also got married to Israeli women, then at some point they returned to Egypt with their Israeli wives, and for some reason that the article doesn't explain, most of them chose to live in one neighborhood in Alexandria, the "Monasra" neighborhood.

So what is the problem?

Mohammed Al-Badrashin, who is a candidate in the current parliamentary elections and also a current member of the parliament, and who happens to be a Nasserist (a follower of Nasser legacy), is running in the electoral circuit that the Monasra neighborhood follows. He presented a request for the Prime Minister Ahmad Nazif, to remove the names of those 2000 Egyptians from the voters list (i.e. making them ineligible to vote), and stated that their votes would be "invalid" simply because they lived in Israel for some time and because they are married to Israeli women.

By the way, the Israeli women in question are from the "1948 Arabs", in other words they are Palestinians who chose to remain within Israeli territory and receive the Israeli nationality after Israel was established in 1948. This means they are probably not Jewish, but if they were, that would have made things in Egypt even worse for them and their husbands.

Not only that, but Al-Badrashin went as far as stating that since it is possible those men have acquired the Israeli citizenship, then Egypt has to renounce “such people", in other words he is saying Egypt need to revoke their citizenship, even though the laws of Egypt allows multinationalities for an individual.

I haven't seen any news about what happened with Al-Badrashin's request, but this shows how this parliament member thinks of his fellow citizens who are excercising their rights, and who chose to live and get married in a country that has a peace treaty with Egypt that was signed 26 years ago. It is not surprising though, probably most people in Egypt will agree with Al-Badrashin's request.

The second article mentions a lawyer, Galal Abdul-Rahman, who claims that the resolutions of the recent Coptic conference in the USA were "unjust" and "unconstitutional", and that the participants in the conference are "working against Egypt" when they demand change in the second article of the Egyptian constitution, or when they demand assigning 15% of parliament seats and public office positions. You can judge by yourself and tell us what you think... the resolutions are located here.

All of that is still not that bad, it's still an opinion that he can express. But that's not all what he did. Abdul-Rahman also filed a lawsuit against the Egyptian president, prime minister, and the minister of interior, demanding that they revoke the Egyptian citizenship from participants in the conference, and saying that they do not deserve to be Egyptians... And again I wouldn't be surprised if many or most of Egyptians agreed with that.

Who said dictatorship or fascism has to come from the government? And how can we ask a dictatorship to implement democracy if many of the people who demand democracy are the same people who try to throw out those who are different and those who disagree with the “opinion of the people”, and consider them unworthy to be Egyptians to begin with?

إن وجود نظام حكم شمولي يقهر شعبه هو بالتأكيد شيء سيء. والأسوأ هو أن يكون المجتمع والشعب نفسه هو الذي يقهر المواطنين الذين لهم آراء أو مُعتقدات تخالف الأغلبية. أمّا المصيبة فهي تواجد الاثنين معا: نظام ديكتاتوري، ومجتمع قاهر للأقليّات بمختلف أشكالها، حيث أنه لا يمكن إصلاح واحد منهما (النظام أو المجتمع) بدون إصلاح الثاني، وفي نفس الوقت فإنه شبه مستحيل إصلاح الاثنين معا.

قرأت مؤخرا مقالين إخباريين يوضحان كيف يقوم الناس في مصر باضطهاد رفاقهم المواطنين، أو حتى يتصرّفون على أساس أن من يختلف عن الأغلبية ليس لديه الحق في المواطنة، لمجرد أنهم اختاروا ألا يسيروا مع القطيع، لسبب أو لآخر.

المقالة الأولى تتحدث عن 2000 مصري (يبدو أنهم جميعا من الرجال فقط)، كانوا قد سافروا في السابق لإسرائيل للعمل، وبينما كانوا هناك قاموا بالزواج من إسرائيليات، ثم بعد ذلك قاموا في وقت ما بالعودة لمصر، ويبدو أنه لسبب ما قاموا بالسكن في حي بالإسكندرية يُدعى "المناصرة".

أين المشكلة؟

محمد البدرشين، مرشح ناصري مستقل في انتخابات مجلس الشعب بالدائرة التي يتبعها حي المناصرة، وعضو حالي بالمجلس، قام بتقديم طلب لرئيس الوزراء أحمد نظيف، يرجو فيه إزالة أسماء الـ 2000 مصري من قوائم الناخبين في الدائرة، معللا طلبه بأن أصوات هؤلاء "باطلة" لمجرد أنهم عاشوا في إسرائيل في السابق وقاموا بالزواج من إسرائيليات.

بالمناسبة، الواضح من المقال أن هؤلاء الإسرائيليات هم من "عرب 1948"، أي أنهم من الفلسطينيين الذين إختاروا أو أختارت عائلاتهم البقاء داخل الحدود الاسرائيلة بعد إنشاء إسرائيل في 1948، وهذا يعني أن بالطبع يعني أن هؤلاء الإسرائيليات لسن يهوديات، وإنما في الغالب مسلمات أو مسيحيات. أما لوكُنّ يهوديات لكان الموضوع أشد صعوبة طبعا في مصر، عليهن وعلى أزواجهن.

ليس هذا فقط، بل أن البدرشين يقول أنه بما أنّ من المحتمل أن يكون ال 2000 مصري قد حصلوا على الجنسية الاسرائيلية بسبب إقامتهم هناك والزواج بإسرائيليات، فإنه لابد من أن تتبرأ الجنسية المصرية من "أمثال هؤلاء"، أي أنه يقصد أنه لابد لمصر من أن تسحب الجنسية من هؤلاء، رغم أن القانون في مصر لا يمنع تعدد الجنسيات للشخص الواحد.

لم أعثر على أخبار حول ما حدث لها الطلب بعد ذلك، ولكن هذا الخبر في حد ذاته يوضح رأي هذا العضو بمجلس الشعب في المواطنين الذين يمارسون حقوقهم، والذين اختاروا أن يعيشوا أو يتزوجوا في دولة تربطها مع مصر معاهدة سلام تم توقيعها منذ 26 عاما. لكن هذا الأمر ليس مفاجئا على أي حال، فمن المتوقع أيضا أن يتفق أغلب المصريين في الرأي مع البدرشين.

أما المقالة الثانية فهي تتحدث عن محامي إسمه جلال عبدالرحمن، وهو يزعم أن قرارات مؤتمر أقباط المهجر الذي عُقد مؤخرا في الولايات المتحدة كانت "غير عادلة"، و"غير دستورية"، وأن المشاركين بالمؤتمر "يعملون ضد مصلحة مصر" عندما يطالبون بتغيير المادة الثانية في الدستور أو عندما يطالبون بتخصيص 15% من مقاعد مجلس الشعب والوظائف العامة للأقباط. من الممكن أن تكوّن رأيك الخاص في هذه القرارات وتقول لنا عن رأيك... قرارات المؤتمر موجودة هنا.

حتى الآن كل هذا الكلام عادي جدا. المؤتمر لا يعجبه وهو يقول رأيه الذي من المتوقع أن يؤيده الكثيرين في مصر. ولكن المشكلة أنه قد قام بناء على ما سبق برفع دعوة قضائية يطالب فيها رئيس الجمهورية، ورئيس الوزراء، ووزير الداخلية، بسحب الجنسية المصرية من المشاركين في المؤتمر، ويقول أن هؤلاء ليس من حقهم أن يكونو مصريين.

من قال أن الديكتاتورية والفاشية مصدرها الحكومة فقط؟ وكيف يمكن مطالبة حكومة ديكتاتورية بتطبيق الديموقراطية، إذا كان الشعب نفسه الذي يطالب بالديموقراطية يقوم في نفس الوقت الكثيرين منه بمحاولة طرد المختلفين وكل من يخرج عن "رأي الشعب"، ويعتبر أنهم لا يستحقون أن يكونوا مصريين أصلا؟

I said my opinion about Abdel Kareems detention here. Few days ago Abdel Karim announced on his blog that he was freed from the State Security detention, and promised he would tell us about his experiencel later.

Today he is explaining some of the lessons he learned from this experience, although he is not yet talking about what exactly did he experience during his detention. I read what he wrote and chose to translate what I think the two important parts of it:

"I wasn't jailed, for my mind was and still is free from all physical and psychological restraints that couldn't cause harm to it, and if my body was jailed then there is nothing new about it, it only means that I was moved from a big jail to a small disciplanary cell because I did not follow the rules that the seventy million Egyptians are forced to abide by, and I broke the widespread traditions in the Great Jail of the Arab Republic of Egypt!"

"It is very terrible that freedom would be taken from a human being because of an opinion or belief of his, but... it is very beautiful that his detention would be an encouragement for him to stick by his principles, and a reason for him to defy and hold on to what he thinks is right, even if he violates the traditions and beliefs of the majority of the people within the boundaries of his society ..."

I am looking forward to Abdel Karim's writtings and opinions, and to know more about what happened during his detention. I am also looking forward to hear the opinions of those who supported his detention and/or disagreed with him, since I haven't yet seen any one answering Abdel Kareem's opinions or explaining why this form of speech should be "outlawed".

ذكرت في السابق رأيي في موضوع اعتقال عبدالكريم هنا. منذ عدة أيام ذكرعبدالكريم في سجلّه أنه قد تمّ إطلاق سراحه من قبل أمن الدولة، وقال أنه سوف يتحدث عن تجربته في وقت لاحق. اليوم عبدالكريم يذكر ما يمكن أن نطلق عليه الدروس المُستفادة من التجربة التي مرّ بها. الموضوع بالكامل موجود هنا، وإن كنت أحبّ أن أنقل جزئين مما كتبه عبدالكريم:

سوف أنتظر المزيد من المعلومات من عبدالكريم حول التجربة التي مرّ بها مؤخرا، وسأنتظر أيضا المزيد من آرائه. بل وأيضا سأستمر في انتظار الآراء التي تردّ على ما يقوله عبدالكريم من الذين يختلفون معه، أو من هؤلاء الذين يؤيدون اعتقاله أو يعتقدون أن آراء عبدالكريم يجب أن تكون مُجرّمة من قبل القانون - حيث أنني حتى الآن لم أجد أي "آراء" مضادة لما يقوله عبدالكريم بالتحديد.

Why do they hate us?

For good reasons.

This is actually a comment I made to a post in Karim Elsahy's blog. That post was about why the Muslims' image is not so good in the West, and why people in the West generalize when talking about Muslims, especially in the media, as if all Muslims are terrorists.

In response to what Hussam said, yes there are terrorists from all religions. And yes most Muslims are not terrorists. But many Muslims sympathise with terrorists, and that is the real problem, because they give ligitimacy to acts of terrorism, at least from the point of view of populations in countries where Muslims are the majority. It is not strange then for them to have a bad image in the West and in the western media.

Here are examples of some of the things I am talking about, which needs to stop before any complaints are made about Muslims' image in the eyes of others:

- Thinking that Muslims or Islam should be in a constant conflict with others.

- Trying to find excuses for terrorist actions and/or blaming the West/USA/Israel or the American-Zionist conspiracy for it.

- Defending and sympathizing with terrorism against foreign countries and Israel.

- The hate speaches against infidels and Jews by imams in every Muslim country.

- Using Quranic verses to justify "jihad" against the west.

- Calling terrorist attacks in Israel and Iraq "legitimate resistance".

- Failing to accept the "other" in Islamic societies.

- Conditions that cause non-Muslim minorities to immigrate in higher numbers than Muslims from Islamic countries.

- Getting enraged because someone insulted the Quran or because of Abo Ghareb scandal, but not when a foreigner gets butchered by terrorists infront of a camera.

- The "Redda Punishment" (sentencing someone to death because they left Islam to another religion or no religion).

- Failing to understand that religion is a personal choice that affects no one but the individual who chooses it or leaves it.

- Beleiving that gays should be killed as a punishment for their "evil actions".

Yeah you are right... most Muslims are not terrorists, but when the majority look at terrorists as heros and martyrs, then really no more reasons are needed for the bad image. And nothing will change unless the individuals and Islamic societies change themselves.

لماذا يكرهوننا؟

لأسباب وجيهة.

كان هذا أصلا تعليق كتبته ردا على تدوينة في سجلّ كريم الصاحي. التدوينة كانت عن سبب التشوّه في صورة المسلمين في الغرب، ولماذا الإعلام والناس في الدول الأجنبية يعمّمون عندما يتكلمون عن المسلمين، وكأن كل أو أغلب المسلمين إرهابيين.

ردا على ماذكره حسام: نعم، هناك متطرفون أو إرهابيون من كل دين. ونعم، أغلب المسلمين ليسوا إرهابيين. ولكن الكثير من المسلمين يتعاطفون مع الإرهابيين، وهذه هي المشكلة الحقيقية، لأنهم يعطون الإرهاب شرعية، على الأقل من وجهة نظر الشعوب في الدول ذات الأغلبية الاسلامية. ليس غريبا إذن أن تكون صورة المسلمين سيئة في الغرب والإعلام الأجنبي.

هذه بعض الأمثلة لما أتحدث عنه، ولا أعتقد أنه يوجد مجال للشكوى من الصورة المشوهة للمسلمين في عيون الآخرين إذا لم تتوقف مثل هذه الأفكار أو التصرفات:

التصور بأن المسلمين أو الإسلام يجب أن يكونوا في صراع دائم ومنافسة مع الآخرين.

محاولة العثور على أعذار للإرهابيين و/أو إلقاء اللوم على الغرب/الولايات المتحدة/إسرائيل أو المؤامرة الأمريكية الصهيونية.

التعاطف أو الدفاع عن أي عمليات إرهابية ضد دول أجنبية أو إسرائيل.

خُطب الكراهية التي يقوم بها أئمة الجوامع في الدول الاسلامية ضد الكفار واليهود.

إستخدام آيات قرآنية لتبرير "الجهاد" ضد الغرب.

إطلاق وصف "المقاومة المشروعة" على العمليات الإرهابية في العراق وإسرائيل.

الفشل في تقبّل "الآخر" في المجتمعات الاسلامية.

الظروف التي تضطر الأقليات غير المسلمة للهجرة من البلاد الاسلامية بأعداد أكبر مقارنة بالمسلمين الذين يهاجرون من نفس البلاد.

الشعور بالغضب عندما يُهان القرآن أو بسبب فضيحة مثل فضيحة أبو غريب، بينما يمرّ ذبح شخص أجنبي أمام الكاميرات مرور عجلات سيارة على شخّة حمار.

"حكم الردة" ، أو الحكم بالقتل على شخص بسبب تركه للإسلام وانتقاله لدين آخر أو لا دين.

عدم القدرة على فهم أن الدين هو اختيار شخصي لا يؤثر إلا على صاحبه.

الاعتقاد أنه بسبب "أفعالهم الشريرة"، يجب قتل المثليين جنسيا كعقاب.

كلامك مضبوط، أغلب المسلمين ليسوا إرهابيين، ولكن عندما يتعاطف الكثيرين من المسلمين مع الإرهابيين ويعتبرونهم أبطال و"شهداء"، فهذا سبب كافي لوجود الصورة السيئة التي يعانون منها. ولن يتغير شيء قبل أن يبدأ الأفراد والمجتمعات الإسلامية بتغيير أنفسهم!

Egyptian Blogger Detained After Criticising Islam إعتقال مدوّن مصري بعد انتقاده للإسلام

Abdel Karim Nabil Soliman, a 21 years old blogger, and a student in the religious Azhar University, has been detained l by the State Security in Egypt, after publishing several articles in his blog, in which he criticizes Islam. Most critics of Islam in the Middle East talk about "reforming the religion" or about the "minority of extremists that hijacked the religion", but Abdel Karim disagrees with Islam itself and its principles, and he makes his point very clear.

Because I know the primitive mentalities in Egypt that do not allow disagreement about the most sacred of all - religion, I wasn't surprised when I heard the news. Abdel Karim also published articles about human rights and women rights. He is against practices such as female genital mutilation, and "honor" crimes (when women are murdered by their own families if it is discovered they are not virgins or if they had sex with someone other than their husband). In Egypt, female genital mutilation is common among the majority of the population, while "honor crimes" are often heard of in the news.

Many Egyptian bloggers are making an honorable stand with Abdel Karim and believe in his right to express his opinions, regardless of whether they agree with it or not. But others think that Abdel Karim broke the law when he expressed his opinion, and as a result he should be arrested and have a "fair trial" without interference of State Security - as if the laws and courts of Egypt provide a perfect standard for human rights and freedom of expression! There are also those who consider Abdel Karim's opinions as a personal insult to them that will allow them to file a law suite against him! But it is clear from reading his articles that his opinions are directed towards Islam, certain Islamic figures, in addition to the followers of Islam in general - he only talks about public figures, there are no "personal insults" in his articles.

I believe that Abdel Karim has the right to freely express his opinions about Islam or any other religion or subject. His readers have the right to agree or disagree with some or all of his opinions - but to support his detention, disrespect his right to free speach, or say that he should be subjected to a "fair trial", is a sign of weakness and failure to intelligently disagree with him, and a live example of the mentality of suppression.

This incident is not a precedent. The history of persecution and jailing people who express their opionions in Egypt is well known. But to my knowledge, Abdel Karim is the first Egyptian blogger to be detained by State Security because of his opinions, and I suspect he won't be the last. We are all in danger, and it is really not because of the State Security or government policies in these matters, or because the laws that incriminate opinions, but because of the types of people that are incapable of living side by side with those who disagree with them on a variety of issues, including religion. Unfortunately, those types of people who do not accept disagreement are the majority in the Egyptian society.

قام جهاز أمن الدولة باعتقال عبدالكريم نبيل سليمان، مدوّن لديه من العمر 21 سنة، وهو طالب في جامعة الأزهر، وذلك بعد أن قام بنشر عدة مقالات في مدوّنته ينتقد فيها الدين الإسلامي.

أغلب منتقدي الإسلام في الشرق الأوسط يتحدثون عن "إصلاح الدين" أو عن "القلة المتطرفة التي قامت بخطف الإسلام وتشويهه"، ولكن عبدالكريم يختلف مع الدين الاسلامي نفسه ومبادئه، وهو يعبر عن رأيه بوضوح شديد وبشكل مباشر.

إنني أعرف جيدا العقول البدائية في مصر، والتي لا تسمح بالاختلاف في الرأي حول أقدس المواضيع (الدين)، ولهذا لم أندهش عندما سمعت خبر اعتقاله. كان عبدالكريم أيضا قد نشر مقالات حول حقوق الانسان وحقوق المرأة. وهو ضد ممارسات مثل ختان الإناث وما يسمّى بـ "جرائم الشرف"، وهي ما يحدث عندما يتم قتل امرأة من قبل عائلتها لو تم اكتشاف أنها ليست "بكرا" أو لو مارست الجنس مع شخص ليس بزوجها. في مصر، ختان الإناث يتم ممارسته من قبل أغلبية العائلات، بينما "جرائم الشرف" يُسمع عنها بشكل مستمر في الأخبار.

الكثير من المدوّنين المصريين يقفون وقفة مشّرفة مع عبدالكريم ويؤمنون بحقه في التعبير عن رأيه، بغض النظر عن كونهم يتفقون معه في الرأي أو لا. ولكن آخرون يرون أن عبدالكريم عندما عبّر عن رأيه قد خالف القانون وأنه المفروض أن يتم القبض عليه بدون تدخّل أمن الدولة ومحاكمته "محاكمة عادلة"، وكأن القوانين والمحاكم المصرية هي مقياس حقوق الإنسان وحرية التعبير عن الرأي! كما أنهم يعتبرون أن التعبير عن رأيه في الدين هو إهانة شخصية لهم تسمح لهم برفع قضية ضد عبدالكريم أمام المحاكم! بينما من الواضح تماما أن عبدالكريم يتحدث في بعض مقالاته عن الدين الإسلامي وبعض رموزه، بالإضافة لأتباع الإسلام بشكل عام، ولا يتحدث إلا عن شخصيات عمومية. أي أنه لم يوجّه إهانات شخصية لأي شخص.

إنني أؤمن بحق عبدالكريم في التعبير عن رأيه بحرّية في الإسلام أو أي دين أو موضوع آخر. قرّاءه لديهم الحق في أن يتفقوا أو يختلفوا مع بعض أو كل آراءه، ولكن تأييد إعتقاله أو حتى القول أنه لا يستحق أن يعبر عن رأيه بصراحة أو أنه يجب أن يُحاكم "وفقا للقانون" هو علامة ضعف وفشل في الاختلاف معه بشكل متحضّر، ومثال حي على عقلية الكبت والقمع.

ما حدث ليس سابقة. تاريخ الاضطهاد والسجون في مصر ضد حرية التعبير عن الرأي معروف. ولكن على حد علمي، عبدالكريم هو أول مدوّن يتم اعتقاله بسبب آراءه، ولا أعتقد أن هذه الحالة ستكون الوحيدة. إننا جميعا في خطر، ليس بسبب أمن الدولة أو سياسات النظام في هذه المواقف أو القوانين التي تجرّم التعبير عن الرأي، وإنما بسبب نوعيات الأشخاص الذين ليست لديهم القدرة على العيش جنبا إلى جنب مع من يختلفون معهم في الرأي، وحتى حول آرائهم في الدين. وللأسف، هذه النوعية من الأشخاص التي لا تقبل الاختلاف هي الأغلبية في المجتمع المصري.

My Opinion Regarding Moharam Bek Incident in Alexandria تعليقي على أحداث محرم بك بالإسكندرية

Now, few days after it happened, I would like to discuss my opinion regarding this issue from two angles: The religion/culture angle (which is more important in my opinion), and the political angle.

Religion/culture angle:

I downloaded and watched the play and I didn't find anything in it that conflicts with what a Christian or non-Muslim person believes in generally about Islam or some of its followers, so I don't see a reason for the astonishment or anger by some people. Every religion has a point of view towards other religions, and the same goes in the mutual perception of the religions of Islam and Christianity. Not understanding that is an inability to accept differences in opinion and beliefs. And there are Muslims, by the way, who will agree with many parts of the play. Freedom of belief and expression must be given to everyone, and when people disagree, they can discuss and debate their differences, and at the end, every person follows what they believe.

On this occasion, it is worth mentioning that the mentality of those who actually agree with the demands to burn the church down, "punish" those responsible for the play, or even expect an apology for a play that reflects an opinion, is the same mentality that demands killing or even hating someone because he or she chooses to convert to a different religion, the same mentality that sentenced Salman Rushdy to death because of his book "Satanic Verses", and the same mentality that moves a terrorist. A complex of long-term brainwashing, ignorance, hate, suppression, and an inability to accept the "other". Religion in the Middle East is indeed a perfect tool to control the masses.

Political angle:

Elaph has recently published an Arabic-language article that explains the whole situation, which I would like to summarize in four points:

1. The play took place about 2 years ago and showed only once.

2. The 2005 parliamentary elections in Egypt will take place soon. The ruling party selected a Christian, Maher Khella, as a candidate for the Moharam Bek circuit, which is the area where the riots have been taking place. Against him, Osama Gado, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, which in this year has doubled the number of it's candidates since the 2000 Parliamentary elections.

3. Another important thing noted in the article, is that the majority of the rioters/demonstrators are not actually from Moharam Bek neighborhood, according to the Imam of the mosque where the demonstrations started. The people interviewed in that area also said that those people were mobilized from Beheira and the suburbs of Alexandria, where the Muslim Brotherhood have strong influence.

4. Someone is responsible for several things that took place in an organized fashion:
- Mobilizing thousands of people.
- Distributing CD copies of the play.
- Distributing articles by 2 news papers that talked about the play and described it as offensive to Islam.

The whole thing seems to be a dirty political game by the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, to put the ruling party candidate in a tough spot, which already led him to discontinue his candidacy. However, dirty politics is not the issue here. If the culture of the Egyptian society allowed freedom of choice and religion, and the right to express opinions, agree, and disagree, we wouldn't have this or many other problems to begin with. Nothing will change in the country if people's mentality doesn't change.

My next question -which is also the question of the article- is will the Egyptian government, known with its dictator style methods, do anything with the Muslim Brotherhood candidate in Moharam Bek, or the MB in general, after this incident? Or will they pretend that this never happened? I can't wait to see.

خلفية الموضوع: قام الآلاف من المتظاهرين بحصار كنيسة القديس جرجس بمحرم بك في مدينة الإسكندرية، بعد أن قامت صحيفتين بنشر مقالات غير دقيقة وغير مكتملة عن مسرحية تم عرضها منذ سنتين في الكنيسة، وادعت الجريدتان أنها تسيء للدين الاسلامي. تسبب الموضوع في أحداث شغب أدت لمقتل عدة أشخاص وجرح العشرات حول الكنيسة، بالإضافة إلى تحطيم وحرق محلات يمتلكها مسيحيون وسيارات. لمزيد من التفاصيل يمكنك قراءة هذا الخبر.

الآن، وبعد أن حدث كل هذا بعدة أيام أود أن أناقش رأيي في هذا الموضوع من بُعدين: البُعد الديني والثقافي (وهوالأهم، في رأيي)، والبُعد السياسي.

البعد الديني والثقافي:

لقد قمت بتنزيل ومشاهدة المسرحية ولم أجد فيها أي شيء يتعارض مع ما يؤمن به أي مسيحي أو أي شخص غير مسلم بشكل عام عن الإسلام أو بعض أتباعه، ولهذا فلا أجد أي سبب للإندهاش أو الغضب الذي نزل بالبعض. كل دين له وجهة نظر معروفة تجاه الأديان الأخرى، ونفس الشيء يسري على النظرة المتبادلة بين ديانتي الإسلام والمسيحية. عدم القدرة على فهم ذلك هو نوع من العجز عن تقبل الإختلاف في الرأي والمعتقد. ثم أن هناك من المسلمين من سيتفق مع الكثير مما جاء في المسرحية. حرية الإعتقاد والتعبير عن الرأي يجب أن تكون مكفولة للجميع، وفي حالة الإختلاف في الرأي المفروض أن يقوم الناس بالنقاش والحوار حول مايختلفون عليه، وفي النهاية، كل شخص يتبع ما يقتنع به.

تجدر الإشارة إلى أن عقلية هؤلاء الذين يوافقون على حرق تلك الكنيسة، أو "معاقبة" المسئولين عن المسرحية، أو حتى من يطالبون باعتذار عن هذه المسرحية التي تعبر عن رأي أصحابها، هي نفس العقليات التي تطالب بقتل أو نبذ من يغير دينه، ونفس العقليات التي حكمت بالإعدام على سلمان رشدي بسبب كتابه "آيات شيطانية"، وهي أيضا نفس العقلية التي تحرك الإرهابي. مزيج من الغسيل البطيء للمخ على المدى الطويل، والجهل، والكراهية، والكبت، وعدم القدرة على استيعاب الآخر. الأديان في الشرق الأوسط هي بالفعل أداة فعالة للتحكم في الشعوب.

البُعد السياسي:

نشرت إيلاف مؤخرا مقالة شرحت فيها الموقف بالكامل، ألخّص منها أربع نقاط:

أولا:
المسرحية عُرضت من حوالي سنتين ولمرة واحدة فقط.

ثانيا:
إختار الحزب الحاكم شخص مسيحي وهو ماهر خلة، كمرشح للحزب عن دائرة محرم بك في انتخابات مجلس الشعب لهذا العام، وهي نفس المنطقة التي حدثت بها أعمال العنف بعد ذلك. مرشح الإخوان المسلمين في نفس الدائرة هو أسامة جادو. الإخوان المسلمين تقدموا بضعف عدد المرشحين هذه السنة مقارنة بسنة 2000.

ثالثا:
أغلب المتظاهرين ومرتكبي أعمال العنف ليسوا من حي محرم بك، طبقا لما قاله إمام الجامع الذي بدأت منه المظاهرات. الناس الذين تحدث معهم ممثلوا الجريدة قالوا أن المتظاهرين تم حشدهم من المناطق العشوائية في الاسكندرية، ومن محافظة البحيرة، حيث تتمتع جماعة الإخوان المسلمين بنفوذ واسع.

رابعا:
هناك جهة مسئولة عن عدة أشياء حدثت بشكل منظم:
حشد آلاف المتظاهرين،
وتوزيع نسخ المسرحية بالآلاف،
وتوزيع قصاصات عن الموضوع من الجريدتين اللتين قامتا بتغطية الموضوع.

الموضوع بأكمله يبدوأنه ليس سوى لعبة سياسية قذرة من قبل مرشح الإخوان المسلمين لوضع مرشح الحزب الوطني في موقف حرج، وهو ما دفعه بالفعل للإعتذار عن الترشيح. ولكن، القضية بالأساس ليست قضية ألعاب سياسية قذرة. لو كانت ثقافة المجتمع المصري تسمح بحرية الاختيار والعقيدة، وحرية التعبير عن الرأي، وحرية الاتفاق والاختلاف مع الآخرين، لم تكن هذه المشكلة والكثير من المشاكل الأخرى قد حدثت. لن يتغير أي شيء في البلد قبل أن تتغير عقلية الشعب.

السؤال المهم الذي يهمني معرفة إجابته، وهو نفس سؤال المقالة، ماذا ستفعل الحكومة - المعروفة بطرقها الديكتاتورية- ماذا ستفعل بشأن مرشح الإخوان المسلمين في دائرة محرم بك، أو بشأن جماعة الإخوان المسلمين بشكل عام؟ أو هل ستتظاهر الدولة بأن كل هذا لم يحدث؟

Egypt and Israel... where to?

The celebration of the 1973 war is considered very important in Egypt. While most people in Egypt see this Anniversary of the last war between Egypt and Israel as a chance to celebrate the war and its military results, and as a way to achieve much needed self-confidence at both personal and national level, I think we are not focusing the celebrations on the right thing.

Regardless of the military results of the war and the disagreement between the two sides on who was in a better military and strategic shape when the war ended, I consider the political developments that followed and ending the state of war between the two countries to be much more important series of events than the war itself. By now, 32 years after the war ended, what should the focus of celebration is not war itself, but our ability to end the state of war and achieve peace, and remembering the people who lost their lives in those wars.

It is important to note that the peace that we have now between Egypt and Israel is no more than a "permanent no-war situation", it's not positive peace or anything that we can achieve our interests through. This situation is influenced by many factors, including local pressure, and support for other countries in the region that failed to do what Egypt did during the second half of the 70s (aka “Arab Countries”).

There is no question in my mind that the current situation in the Middle East and the failure of the region’s countries to reach peace with Israel is the result of the policies and arrogance of certain regimes or groups, such as Assad in Syria (father and son), Saddam, Arafat, or terrorist organizations associated with the Palestinian cause, such as Hamas and groups that existed since the 70s. There is also the general hatred towards anything Israeli or Jewish that is taught at the early years of one's life. All that is combined with the regime's and people's need to find an external enemy to blame for all their local frustration and failures.

However, in Egypt, the local pressure against the peace agreement during the 70s did not prevent Egypt from signing it, and did not prevent them from gaining its limited - yet important - benefits, such as stopping the war and exchanging ambassadors. What people in Egypt need is to learn to appreciate the peace they achieved and the importance of developing it. I always wonder why Mubarak and his people aren't doing anything to develop relations with Israel, although it will be in the best interest of both the regime and the people of Egypt.

I see no reason why Egypt should wait for other regimes and terrorist organizations to learn their lesson or to be destroyed... why should we sacrifice our own interests for those who have a different agenda and don’t care for their own people’s interest? We already waited for 32 years - much more than enough in my opinion.

In wars between nations, true victory cannot be claimed without having the courage to achieve complete peace. Egypt and Israel have already paid the price of war and peace between the two countries, and it wasn't cheap.
I support immediate normal relations between Egypt and Israel that include political, economic, cultural, and social cooperation, and I believe that such relations are in the best interest of both countries and their people.

يُعتبر الإحتفال بذكرى حرب 1973 شيء مهم للغاية في مصر، ولكن في الوقت الذي يَعتبر أغلب المصريون ذكرى هذه الحرب الأخيرة بين مصر وإسرائيل فرصة للاحتفال بذكرى الحرب ونتائجها العسكرية، وأسلوب للحصول على جرعة من الثقة بالنفس التي يحتاجونها على المستويين الشخصي والوطني، أنا أعتقد أننا لا نركّز الاحتفالات على الشيء الصحيح.

بغض النظر عن النتائج العسكرية للحرب والاختلاف بين الطرفين على من كان في حالة عسكرية وستراتيجية أفضل بعد نهاية الحرب، التطورات السياسية التي حدثت بعد ذلك و إنهاء حالة الحرب بين البلدين هي أهم بكثير من الحرب نفسها. الآن، بعد 32 سنة من توقف الحرب بين البلدين، التركيز في الاحتفالات لا يجب أن يكون على الحرب والعداء، وإنما على قدرتنا على إنهاء حالة الحرب والتوصل للسلام، وتذكر ضحايا الحروب.

من المهم ملاحظة أن السلام القائم حاليا بين مصر وإسرائيل هو ليس أكثر من "حالة إنعدام الحرب دائمة"، وليس سلام إيجابي أو أي شيء يمكن أن نحقّق به مصالحنا. إختيار هذا الوضع من قِبَل مصر له عدة أسباب من ضمنها الضغوط الداخلية، ولدعم الدول الأخرى في المنطقة التي فشلت في تحقيق ما حققته مصر خلال النصف الثاني من السبعينات (أي ما يُطلق عليه الدول العربية).

لا يوجد عندي أي شك من أن الموقف الحالي في الشرق الأوسط وفشل دول المنطقة في تحقيق السلام مع إسرائيل هو نتيجة سياسات وعنجهية بعض الأنظمة والمنظمات، مثل حكومة الأسد (الأب والإبن) في سوريا، أو صدام، أو عرفات، أو المنظمات الارهابية التي تربط نفسها بالقضية الفلسطينية، مثل حماس أو الجماعات التي ظهرت منذ السبعينات. هناك أيضا الكراهية لأي شيء إسرائيلي أو يهودي والتي يبدأ الناس تعلمها منذ سنواتهم الأولى. كل هذا بالإضافة لحاجة الأنظمة والشعوب لعدوّ خارجي يلومونه على فشلهم الداخلى وإحباطاتهم.

ولكن في مصر، الضغوط الداخلية ضد إتفاقية السلام خلال السبعينات لم تمنع مصر من توقيعها، ولم تمنع الشعب المصري من الحصول مزاياها البسيطة -والمهمة - حتى الآن مثل توقف الحرب وتبادل السفراء. ما يحتاجه الناس في مصر هو إدراك قيمة السلام الذي توصّلوا إليه وأهمية تنميته. أنا دائما أتساءل لماذا لا يقوم مبارك وجماعته بأي شيء حقيقي لتطوير العلاقات مع إسرائيل، رغم أن هذا يصب في مصلحة كل من النظام والشعب المصري.

لا أرى أي سبب يجعل مصر تنتظر أنظمة أخرى أو منظمات إرهابية حتى يتعلموا الدرس أو يتم تدميرهم... لماذا نضحي بمصالحنا من أجل هؤلاء الذين لهم أجندة مختلفة ولا تعنيهم مصالح شعوبهم؟ لقد إنتظرنا بالفعل 32 سنة، أكثر بكثير من اللازم.

في الحروب بين الدول، لايمكن إدعّاء النصر الحقيقي بدون إمتلاك الشجاعة لتحقيق السلام الكامل. مصر وإسرائيل قد دفعتا بالفعل ثمن الحرب والسلام، ولم يكن هذا الثمن رخيصا.

The prosecutor introduced materials and shrapnel that were collected at the scene, and that proved to be identical to the materials found in explosives manufactured by the Hamas. Some of the shrapnel contained wood and strings, which contradicts any claims that an Israeli missile was fired at the parade.

The prosecutor reported that the Hamas refused to hand over to the police the remains of the car that exploded in the parade, and concluded that no external cause was involved in the blast

So was Hamas's knowledge that their responsibility for the blast will surface the reason for their sudden announcement that they will uphold the ceasefire with Israel (agreeing to the demands of the Palestinian Authority), even though Israel repeatedly targeted them after Hamas fired missiles on Southern Israel?

Inter-Faith Marriage الزواج المُختلط

Personally, I believe in civil marriage as the best form of marriage, and that the religious faith of the husband and the wife should not be an issue when choosing a spouse. Inter-faith marriages should be perfectly legal and socially acceptable.

As for children, which is the issue that follows any talk about inter-faith marriages, when their time comes those children should have the freedom to study and choose their faith based on what they believe in, not based on their parents' faith - and the same should apply even if the parents belong to a single faith.

I say all this after I read an article (in Arabic language) about how some Muslim women in the West choose to marry non-Muslim men, ignoring that they are forbidden by their religion to do so, and facing huge social difficulties caused by their families and Muslim friends. Muslim men, of course, are allowed to marry non-Muslim women... but not just any non-Muslims, they have to be either Christian or Jew.

Taking into consideration that it is a matter of opinion and interpretation, the extreme majority of Muslims (and Christians) in the Middle East believe inter-faith marriages are forbidden. And of course what follows is that those marriages are illegal in Egypt and most Islamic countries.

But if people believe they must find a partner from the same faith, does this mean they have an unwritten contract stating that neither of them will change their faith for the rest of their lives? And what guarantees that? What if a spouse decides one day to switch, does this mean their marriage must end? Should marriage mean an end to one's spiritual discovery and growth, or one’s search for a faith more compatible with his or her beliefs?

Does this majority prefer to live a lie with a spouse who hides their true beliefs just because bringing it to the surface will ruin your marriage and the lives of your children?

Religion is a belief, a personal practice, and a choice of the individual, there is no reason why it should affect others, including the individual's spouse or children.

في رأيي الشخصي أن أفضل أنواع الزواج هو الزواج المدني، وأن المعتقدات الدينية للزوج والزوجة لا يجب أن تكون قضية عند اختيار شريك الحياة. الزواج المُختلط بين أشخاص من ديانات مختلفة يجب أن يكون مقبول قانونيا واجتماعيا.

أما الأطفال، وهم القضية التي تتبع أي مناقشة حول الزواج المُختلط، فعندما يأتي وقتهم المفروض أن يكون لديهم الحرية لدراسة واعتناق أي دين بناء على ما يؤمنون به، وليس حسب دين الأب أو الأم - بل ويجب أن يسري نفس هذا النظام حتى إذا كان الأب والأم من نفس الديانة.

السبب في كلامي عن هذا الموضوع هو هذه المقالة التي تتحدث عن كيف أن بعض النساء المسلمات اللاتي انتقلن للعيش في دول غربية قد اخترن أن يتزوجن من رجال غير مسلمين، متجاهلات أن هذا الزواج مُحرّم دينيا من وجهة نظر الأغلبية، مما يؤدي لحدوث ضغوط وصعوبات اجتماعية تتسبب فيها عائلاتهن وأصدقائهن المسلمين. الرجال المسلمين، بالطبع، يحق لهم الزواج من غير المسلمات، ولكن الموضوع ليس مفتوحا على آخره، حيث يجب أن تكون الزوجة إما مسيحية أو يهودية.

مع الأخذ في الاعتبار أن هذا الموضوع يختلف من شخص لآخر حسب الرأي الشخصي أو التفسير الديني، الأغلبية الساحقة من المسلمين (و المسيحيين) في الشرق الأوسط تعتقد أن الزواج المُختلط حرام دينيا. وبالطبع النتيجة هي أن الزواج المُختلط غير قانوني في مصر وأغلب الدول ذات الأكثرية المسلمة، لما تحمله المعتقدات الدينية للأغلبية من تأثير على قوانين البلاد والحياة الاجتماعية في هذه الدول.

ولكن إذا كان الناس يعتقدون أنه شريك الحياة يجب أن يكون من نفس الدين، فهل هذا يعني أن هناك إتفاق ضمني عند الزواج بأن أي من الزوجين لن يقوم بتغيير مُعتقداته أو معتقداتها طوال حياتهما؟ وما الذي يضمن هذا الكلام؟ ماذا لو قرر أحدهما في يوم ما أن يغيّر دينه، هل هذا يعني أن الزواج يجب أن ينتهي؟ هل عندما يتزوج الانسان يجب عليه أن يتوقف عن الاستكشاف أو النمو الروحي، أو البحث عن إيمان آخر يتفق مع مُعتقداته بشكل أكبر؟

وهل تفضل هذه الأغلبية الساحقة أن تعيش في كذبة إذا كان شريك الحياة لا يُظهر مُعتقداته الحقيقية خوفا من تدمير الزواج وبالتالي حياة الأطفال؟

إن الدين هو مُعتقد وممارسة واختيار شخصي، ولا يوجد سبب يجعل ديانة الشخص تؤثر على علاقته بمن حوله، وهذا يشمل العلاقة بين الزوج و الزوجة، بالإضافة لأطفالهما.ء

يقول مدير جمعية حقوق الانسان لمساعدة السجناء، محمد الزارعي: " المشكلة أن النظام يتعامل مع المعتقلين السياسيين كأنه مُجرّد ملفات سياسية، دون أن ينظر للآثار النفسيّة، والاقتصاديّة، والاجتماعيّة الكبيرة التي يعاني منها هؤلاء المعتقلون وعائلاتهم.

والنتيجة كارثية بجميع المقاييس.

"هناك أعداد كبيرة [من المعتقلين وعائلاتهم] الذين عانوا مُنذ الثمانينات والتسعينات، وبسبب ذلك فهم يكرهون النظام"، كما يقول أحمد سيف الاسلام، المدير التنفيذي لـ مركز هشام مبارك للقانون.
ويقول أيضا: "من الواضح تماما أن هدف الوزارة هو إبقاء هؤلاء في المعتقلات السياسية حتى يقتربوا من الموت... هذه السياسة تم تبنيها مُنذ 1981".

كما يقول محمد الزارعي: "بعض المعتقلين لديهم بالفعل أفكار خطيرة، والبعض الآخر اعتنق هذه الأفكار خلال وجوده بالمعتقل، لكن الكثيرين أبرياء اعتقلوا خطأ... السياسة التي يتبعها النظام قد ثبت أنها ليست الأصلح في مواجهة الارهاب".

A Threat to Egypt's National Security تهديد لأمن مصر القومي

For those who haven’t heard yet, after Israel disengaged from Gaza few days ago, things went out of control there. Thousands of Palestinians illegally crossed the borders between Egypt and Gaza, weapon smugglers sold guns from the Egyptian side to Gaza, Egyptian authorities discovered a tunnel filled with light and heavy infantry weapons, and Hamas blew a hole in the wall on the Egypt-Gaza border.

This kind of chaos on the border can easily include terrorists who participated in recent Sinai bombings fleeing to Gaza to hide among their cousins, or wanted Palestinian terrorists by Israel or the Palestinian Authority escaping and disappearing in Sinai. Guess what an uncontrolled Hamas terrorist will do if he found himself near a Sinai resort that has some Israeli tourists?

As far as I am concerned, this behavior by the Palestinians is the first threat to Egypt's national security on the East border in the last 25 years.

The Minister of Interior (who is so busy waging a war on the opposition in the streets of Egypt) must protect Sinai from illegal trespassers. And the Minister of Defense, who is busy conducting war games in the northern coast, needs to have his border guards to aggressively and immediately defend the border.

People, including those from Gaza, should be welcomed in this country only if they enter legally, but we don't want any new terrorists bombing our people and our visitors, or any foreigners illegally crossing in and out of the country, especially from a territory that lacks law and order like Gaza.

لِمن لم يسمع عن هذا الموضوع... بعد أن قامت إسرائيل بفك الارتباط من قطاع غزة منذ عدّة أيام، خرج الموضوع عن السيطرة على الحدود مصر-غزة. قام آلاف الفلسطينيون بالتسلل بشكل غير قانوني إلى مصر، وازدهرت تجارة تهريب السلاح إلى غزة، واكتشفت السلطات المصرية نفقا مليئا بأسلحة خفيفة وثقيلة، وقامت حماس باستخدام المتفجرات لإحداث فتحة في السور الفاصل بين الجانبين المصري والفلسطيني.

هذه الفوضى على الحدود من الممكن أيضا أن تسهّل هروب المتورطين في التفجيرات الأخيرة في سيناء إلى غزة للاختباء عند أولاد عمومتهم مثلا، أو تسلل إرهابيين فلسطينيين مطلوبين لدى السلطة الفلسطينية وإسرائيل بغرض الاختباء في سيناء... وفي هذه الحالة خمّن ماالذي سيفعله إرهابي حماساوي لو وجد نفسه قرب موقع سياحي في سيناء به سياح إسرائيليون؟

في رأيي أن هذه التصرفات التي يقوم بها الفلسطينيون عبر الحدود قد خلقت أول تهديد لأمن مصر القومي من الناحية الشرقية خلال ال25 سنة الأخيرة.

وزير الداخلية المشغول بإعلان الحرب في شوارع مصر ضد المعارضة يتوجّب عليه حماية سيناء من المتسللين الغير قانونيين. وزير الدفاع المشغول في مناورات الساحل الشمالي يجب أن يتابع الموقف وأن يأمر العسكريين وحرس الحدود بأن يدافعوا عن الحدود المصرية بشكل فعّال وفوري.

أي زوّار بشكل عام (ومن ضمنهم من يأتون مِن غزة) المفروض أن يتم الترحيب بهم في هذه البلد إذا دخلوها بشكل قانوني فقط. أما المتسللون، لا. نحن لا نريد إرهابيون يفجرون مواطنينا وسياحنا، ولا أي أفراد أجانب أن يعبروا الحدود بشكل غير قانوني مِن وإلى البلد، لا سيّما إذا كانوا من منطقة خالية من القانون والنظام مثل غزة.

A new political party in Sweden says it will abolish marriage if it gets into power. The Feminist Initiative, which expects more than 20% of the vote in next year's election, claims marriage "is not about love, but about ownership".

That is being said about marriage in Sweden. I am trying to imagine what they are going to say if they discover the Egyptian-style marriage??

حزب سياسي جديد في السويد إسمه "المبادرة المناصرة للمرأة" يعلن أنه سيلغي الزواج إذا وصل إلى السلطة. هذا الحزب الذي يتوقع 20% من الأصوات في انتخابات العام القادم، يقول أن الزواج "لا يحدث بسبب الحب، وإنما بسبب الرغبة في التملّك".

هذا الكلام يُقال عن الزواج في السويد. ما الذي سيقولونه لو اكتشفوا الزواج على الطريقة المصرية؟؟

Challenges Facing Progressivs in Egypt تحديات تواجه التقدميين في مصر

Progressives in Egypt have a lot to deal with. While Mubarak’s regime and the army’s domination of political life in Egypt in the last 53 years is one thing, major opposition forces and their agendas is another problem.

Contrary to what many might think, the bulk of the opposition in Egypt is composed of traditionalists, while progressives are a minority. In fact, other than corruption and the current election process, the policies of the regime are much more progressive than most of what the traditionalist opposition would like to take place in Egypt.

(I am avoiding the use of the words “liberals” and “conservatives”, because some of our friends in a certain country may not be convinced that the meaning of those two words changes from one country to another, or automatically think that liberal is equal to communist or against the Iraq war).

Unlike the traditionalist opposition, a progressive agenda includes new policies such as normal relations with Israel, new political and economic partnerships with countries in the region and the world rather than ties that are based on nothing with “Arab” countries, an end to the power of religious institutions and separation between government and religion, an end to censorship in all forms, and a new free economy (some form of capitalism) with an end to government owned corporations. Progressives will also seek democracy, civil rights, and freedom of choice and ideas, and will welcome interaction with foreign countries, such as the USA, regarding these issues.

On the other hand, traditionalist opposition is mainly composed of two kinds of people: pan-Arab nationalists such as Nasserists, or groups with a political Islamic agenda, such as the Muslim Brotherhood. Of course, people with such backgrounds would consider a progressive agenda to be a “breach of Egypt’s role in the region” or “a violation of the untouchable national policies”. Ayman Nour, for example, a popular opposition figure who came second after Mubarak in the recent elections, ruled out normalizing relations with Israel if he had won in 2005. Kefaya movement demands free expression and an end to media censorship of political ideas, but in their demonstrations they raise the pictures and chant the name of Egypt’s worst dictator in modern History, Gamal Abdul-Nasser, a symbol of pan-Arabism.

The Egyptian regime, aiming to please all parties including other countries in the region and the world, deliberately puts itself somewhere in the middle between progressives and traditionalists on most, if not all of these political, economic, and social issues. Since Mubarak came to power in 1981, the regime adopted tasteless policies that have no clear direction or affiliation, which resulted in moving the country to… nowhere. Take for example the state of Egypt’s current relations with Israel, or the influence that religious institutions have versus true freedom of expression.

That is why the progressives are in a dilemma. If they choose not to be isolated in the political arena, they will to either accept the current regime with its corruption, its attempts to please everyone, and the lack of a true progressive agenda, or to ally themselves with the rest of the opposition, which if one day came to power, will result in a situation that is not much different from a progressive point of view, or will take Egypt back to the days of the sixties, or even the medieval times.

التقدميين في مصر لديهم مشاكل كثيرة، ومن ضمنها نظام مبارك والهيمنة العسكرية على الحكم في السنوات ال 55 الأخيرة، ولكن المشكلة الأكبر هي توجهات ومطالب جماعات المعارضة الرئيسية.

خلافا لما يعتقده الكثيرون، أغلب كيانات المعارضة في مصر تنتمي لمعسكر "التقليديون"، بينما يُشكل التقدميون نسبة بسيطة في المعارضة. بل أن النظام الحاكم نفسه أكثر تقدمية في توجّهاته مما تريد هذه المعارضة التقليدية أن تراه على أرض الواقع، بخلاف مواضيع كالفساد والانتخابات.

بعكس أهداف المعارضة التقليدية، الأجندة التقدُّمية تشمل سياسات جديدة مثل إنشاء علاقات طبيعية مع إسرائيل، وشراكات سياسية واقتصادية جديدة مع دول المنطقة والعالم بدلا من إرتباطات مبنية على لا شيء مع الدول "العربية"، وفصل الدين عن الدولة وإنهاء نفوذ المؤسسات الدينية، وإنهاء الرقابة بجميع أشكالها، واقتصاد حر مبني على نوع من الرأسمالية مع إنهاء امتلاك الحكومة للشركات. التقدميون أيضا يسعون إلى تحقيق الديموقراطية، الحقوق المدنيّة، وحرية الاختيار والرأي، وسيرحبون بمناقشات مع دول أجنبية كالولايات المتحدة مثلا بخصوص هذه المواضيع.

على الجهة الأخرى، المعارضة التقليدية تنقسم إلى نوعين رئيسيين: القوميون العرب (ومن ضمنهم الناصريين)، أو جماعات الإسلام السياسي مثل الإخوان المسلمين. بالطبع، المنتمين لهذه المعارضة التقليدية سيعتبرون الأجندة التقدمية "إعتداء على دور مصر في المنطقة" أو "مخالفة للثوابت الوطنية". على سبيل المثال، أيمن نور، وهو شخصية معارضة ذات شعبية عالية حققت المركز الثاني في الانتخابات بعد مبارك، قال أنه لن يكون هناك تطبيع مع إسرائيل في حالة فوزه في انتخابات 2005. أما حركة كفاية التي تطلب حرية التعبير عن الرأي وإنهاء الرقابة على الأفكار السياسية، فإن الكثير من أعضائها يحملون صور ويرددون اسم أسوأ ديكتاتور في تاريخ مصرالحديث، جمال عبد الناصر، رمز القومية العربية، وهي مفارقة غريبة.

النظام الحاكم يرغب في إرضاء جميع الأطراف ومن بينها أطراف خارجية في المنطقة والعالم، ويتعمد وضع نفسه في منتصف الطريق بين التقدميين والتقليديين في أغلب، إن لم يكن كل، القضايا السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية. منذ أن وصل مبارك إلى السلطة في 1981، تبنى النظام الحاكم سياسات عديمة الطعم بدون توجهات واضحة، مما تسبب في حالة الجمود التي تعاني منها مصر. على سبيل المثال الوضع الحالي للعلاقات المصرية الاسرائيلية، أو السماح لنفوذ المؤسسات الدينية ضد حرية التعبير عن الرأي.

ولهذا فإن التقدميين في معضلة، فهم إذا اختاروا أن لا يبقوا منفردين في اللعبة السياسية، فسيكون عليهم إما أن يقبلوا النظام الحالي بفساده ومحاولاته لإرضاء جميع الأطراف، وانعدام أجندة تقدمية حقيقية، أو أن يتحالفوا مع بقية جماعات المعارضة، التي إذا وصلت للحكم في يوم ما، ستتسبب في وضع لا يختلف كثيرا عما نعيش فيه اليوم، أو ستتسبب بعودة مصر لأيام الستينات، أو حتى العصور الوسطى.

The Y-Bomb Y القنبلة

Several news reports covered a study about the fate of the Y-chromosome (the chromosome that makes a man a man). The issue is that scientists believe that over long periods of time in the past, the human Y-chromosome suffered mutations and lost many of it’s genes, suggesting that it could disappear millions of years from now, and sighting chimps, who’s Y-chromosome is suffering more loss than the human one.

Men have the gender chromosomes XY, while women have the gender chromosomes XX.

This immediately reminded me of a movie I have seen called (The Last Man on Planet Earth). The movie is about the Y-bomb, a biological weapon designed to spread a deadly disease among humans carrying the Y-chromosome. The purpose of this weapon, which according to the plot was used by the USA in some war in Afghanistan, was to kill the enemy soldiers (who are mostly or all men) and bring an early victory.

When the weapon was used it got out of control and the disease spread among men in the whole world, with an effective kill rate of 97% of the male population. What happened after that is the interesting part:

Women, who suddenly became pissed off by all the war, death, and suffering the men caused in the world during the entire human history, took control of everything and men became outcasts in what can be called concentration camps. New laws were established banning men from leaving their isolated locations and prohibiting women from having sex with men, while allowing women to marry or have sex with each other. To guarantee survival of the species, cloning was used to impregnate women who wanted to become mothers with female babies.

The main target at this point was to prevent women from having male babies, which meant that in a matter of years, after all the surviving men have died, there will be no more male humans.

At that time, and as if men didn’t have enough problems, the president of the United States (a woman, of course) was killed by an angry man.

As the years passed by, all the remaining men in the isolation camps became old, since no male births were occurring, and young women and girls who were born after the war and who were becoming the majority of the population never saw men in their lives. In the midst of all this a mad scientist wanted to prove that men can be peaceful, so she cloned a male after making some genetic modification to strengthen the love and peace parts of her specimen. Many years after that, the boy (now a young man) escaped and was spotted by scared and screaming women in the streets. After the police arrived, a policewoman could not shoot him because she never saw a man in her life, and he gets away in a car.

Some of the funny things in the movie include an secret house where some of the remaining old men are offered for rich women for the purpose of sex, and in another scene a woman with makeup, clothes, and a wig that made her look just like Michael Jackson, she was walking in the street offering herself to other women, and asking them if they are looking for a “boyfriend”.

And the story goes on. The movie could have had much better production and budget, but the idea is what really matters.

I know many (especially most men) won't like this idea, but I am curious about women's opinion. Any way, the reason I say all this is that with all what is happening in the world under the current system, and all the news about violence, terror, and wars, I can’t stop wondering about this imaginary alternative if the plot of this movie becomes reality one day.

بعض التقارير الاخبارية تحدثت عن دراسة بخصوص مصير الكروموسوم Y وهو الكروموسوم الذي يجعل الرجل رجلاً. العلماء يعتقدون أنه خلال فترات طويلة في الماضي السحيق، تأثر هذا الكروموسوم ببعض الطفرات وفقد عدد من جيناته، مما يعني أنه بعد ملايين السنين من الممكن أن يختفي هذا الكروموسوم من التركيبة البيولوجية للرجال. بعض هذه المقالات ذكرت الشمبانزي، لأنه يتعرض لمعدل فقد لخصائص الكروموسوم الذكري أسرع من البشر.

على الفور تذكّرت فيلم أمريكي إسمه "آخر رجل على كوكب الأرض". الفيلم خيالي (أو بمعنى أصح لم تتحقق أحداثه بعد)، ويتحدّث عن قنبلة بيولوجية مُصمّمة لنشر مرض قاتل بين البشر الذين يحملون كروموسوم Y، أي الرجال. الغرض من هذا السلاح (الذي حسب قصة الفيلم استخدمته الولايات المتحدة في حرب ما في أفغانستان)، الغرض منه هو قتل جنود الأعداء الذين بالطبع أغلبهم أو كلّهم من الرجال، لإنهاء الحرب بشكل سريع.

عندما تم استخدام السلاح في الفيلم، خرج الموضوع عن السيطرة وانتشر المرض بين الرجال في جميع أنحاء العالم، وحقّق معدل قتل 97% لدى الذكور. ما حدث بعد ذلك هو الجزء المهم:

بعد ذلك بعدة سنين، عندما أصبح ذلك الطفل رجلا، قام بالهروب من المعمل ورأته النساء في الشارع، حيث طاردته الشرطة، ولكن الشرطية لم تتمكّن من الضغط على الزناد، حيث أنها لم ترى رجلا في حياتها، فتمكّن من الهرب.

بعض المظاهر في الفيلم التي أحسست أنها كوميديّة تشمل بيت سرى تعرض صاحبته بعض من تبقى من الرجال المسنّين لممارسة الجنس مع النساء اللاتي يمكنهنّ الدفع $. وفي مشهد آخر امرأة تضع مستحضرات تجميل وملابس وباروكة لتشبه مايكل جاكسون، وتعرض نفسها في الشارع على النساء اللاتي يردن أن يقضين بعض الوقت الساخن مع صديق (بوي فريند).

وتتوالى الأحداث. ولكن هذا الفيلم كان من الممكن أن يكون أفضل بكثير في حالة زيادة الميزانية ووجود إنتاج وإخراج وسيناريو أفضل. ولكن المهم طبعا هو فكرة الفيلم.

أنا واثق أن الكثيرين (خصوصا أغلب الرجال) لن تعجبهم الفكرة، ولكنني أتسائل عن رأي النساء في هذا الموضوع. على أي حال، بسبب كل مايحدث هذه الأيام في ظل النظام العالمي القائم، وكل الأخبار عن العنف، والإرهاب، والحروب، لا يستطيع الشخص أن يمنع نفسه من التسائل عن البديل الخيالي الذي قد يتحقق في حالة تحول أحداث هذا الفيلم إلى واقع.

We knew it all the time

AN ENGINEER was arrested after managing for quite some time to hide out from a total of 39 court decisions that had landed him 36 years in prison. Police forces captured the man and several others in one day, after deciding to wage an arrest campaign in a certain area where they knew they'd be. Our question is, if they had known all this time where they were, and could arrest them in one day, well what were they waiting for? (From Al Wafd)

Two weddings and a jail sentence

AFTER CONTINUOUS arguments with his new wife a driver decided to trick her into thinking that he had divorced her, and to marry her sister instead. This turned out to be a bad decision, however, because his first wife sought revenge by setting fire to his lodgings, and he was arrested for having married two sisters at the same time, which is illegal. My Note: The guy was arrested for marrying two sisters at the same which is illegal, not for marrying two women simultaneously which is perfectly legal. It's the law of the land.

Exam leak causes flood of chaos

IN THREE different schools in three different governorates teachers were put on trial because of leaking the end of year exams to those students who took expensive private lessons with them. In one case it was reported that the teacher made his favored students swear on a copy of the Koran (the holy book of Muslims) that they would not tell about the cheating - which they did anyway, and in another, the teacher simply handed them the question papers during the exam already answered. The name of this last source (Al Masry Al Youm) in English is “The Egyptian Today”. How ironic.

أنا أتابع "ميدل إيست تايمز"، أو "أوقات الشرق الأوسط" باستمرار، وهي كل فترة تأتي بمقال يحتوي على "مجموعة من المواضيع العجيبة عن مصر".
رغم أنها أمثلة قصيرة وربما عجيبة، فإنها تحكي عن الحياة في مصر وما قد يواجه الانسان العادي في حياته اليومية. هذه بعض المقتطفات من المقال الأخير. المقال بأكمله موجود هنا.

كانوا عارفين مكانه

تم القبض على مهندس بعد أن تهرّب من 39 حكم قضائي بالسجن لمدة مجموعها 36 سنة. قوات البوليس قبضت على هذا الشخص وغيره في يوم واحد، أثناء حملة بوليسية في أحد المناطق التي يعلم البوليس بتواجد هؤلاء الأشخاص بها. جريدة الوفد تتسائل: إذا كانت الشرطة تعلم أماكن تواجد هؤلاء وبإمكانها أن تقبض عليهم في يوم واحد، فلماذا الانتظار كل هذا الوقت؟ (عن الوفد).

جوازتين وسجن

بعد الخلافات المستمرة بينه وبين زوجته، قرر سائق أن يخدع زوجته ويجعلها تعتقد أنه طلّقها، وبعد ذلك قام بالزواج من أختها. ما فعله هذا الرجل ثبت أنّه خطأ، حيث أن زوجته إنتقمت بإحراق مكان إقامته، وأيضا تم القبض عليه بتهمة الزواج من أختين في نفس الوقت، وهو غير قانوني. (عن الوفد).
ملحوظة من عندي: هذا الرجل قبضوا عليه لأنه تزوج أختين في نفس الوقت، وليس لأنه تزوج امرأتين في نفس الوقت، حيث أن تعدد الزوجات مسموح به قانونا. قانون البلد كده!

تسريب الامتحانات يتسبب في حدوث فوضى

في ثلاثة مدارس من ثلاثة محافظات مختلفة، تم محاكمة بعض المدرّسين بتهمة تسريب الامتحانات للطلبة الذين كانوا منتظمين مع هؤلاء المدرّسين في دروس خصوصية. في أحد هذه الحالات، قام المدرّس بإجبار الطالب على أن يحلف على القرآن أنهم لن يقولوا لأحد على هذا التسريب، وفي حالة أخرى قام المدرّس بإعطاء نسخة من الأسئلة بإجاباتها أثناء الامتحان. وبعد ترجمة هذا الخبر الأخير لفت نظري إسم الجريدة... "المصري اليوم". شيء مثير للسخرية.

"Mubarak is more suitable to lead Egypt... I consider his winning in the elections to be a personal victory of mine".

- Again, Pope Shenouda announced his complete support to Mubarak and said that he is against having Coptic candidates for president, and that the president must be a Muslim, like the majority of Egyptians.

- Muslim scholars are busy arguing whether it is religiously allowed to pay homage to the president or to use the word homage when supporting the president. This happens after Al-Azhar Sheikh, in addition to the Minister of Endowments (along with the Imams of Egypt's mosques, according to him) paid homage to President Mubarak.
(And yes, in this part of the world we still use the word homage).
And another Shiekh (Ali Abu-Al-Hasan) said that voting is a religious duty for each citizen, except if that citizen is a libertine, in which case he or she should not be allowed to vote.

- As for Ayman Nour, Al-Ghad candidate, a platform he was standing on collapsed during one of his speeches in Al-Mahalla city, which prompted his supporters to shout slogans against Mubarak and the ruling party. Al-Arabiya says Nour accused the NDP of being responsible for this accident, although I doubt he would be that childish. May be he is.

- While in the city of Port Said, Noaman Gomaa, the candidate for Al-Wafd Party, was fed up by the shouts and slogans of his supporters that did not allow him to start his speech. He tried staring at those leading the shouting so that they would understand and stop, or even asking them to stop and give him a chance to speak, but that didn't work.
There was one guy who kept shouting in support of Gomaa and interrupting him, when finally, Gomaa walked away from the table microphones (forgetting he had a small microphone attached to him) and asked one of his aids "Is there no one who is capable of shutting up that boy, that son of a faggot??" which was heard by the audience and on TV channels. In his following speech in Rod Al-Farag, the people still wouldn’t stop shouting, but this time he remembered the microphone and started the speech without waiting for them to stop.

أتابع دائما موقع العربية، وقد كنت قرأت فيه الكثير في الأسبوعين الماضيين عن أخبار الانتخابات في مصر. هذه بعض المقتطفات والتي نقلت العربية الكثير منها من جريدة الحياة:

أحمد الصباحي، مرشّح حزب الأمة شبه المغمور، قال إنه لا يرى نفسه منافساً لمبارك في هذه الانتخابات ولكنه مشارك من أجل تدعيم الديمقراطية وإثراء التجربة، موضحاً أنه سيتنازل فوراً لمبارك -إذا لا قدر الله وفاز- "لأنه الأقدر والأكفأ على قيادة مصر، ونجاح مبارك هو نجاح لي شخصيا"ً.

مرة أخرى، اعلن البابا شنودة الثالث بابا الاسكندرية وبطريرك الكرازة المرقسية دعمه الكامل لترشيح الرئيس المصري حسني مبارك للانتخابات الرئاسية.
واكد شنودة معارضته لترشيح قبطي لهذه الانتخابات مشددا على ان رئيس الجمهورية يجب ان يدين بدين اغلبية الشعب اي ان يكون مسلما.

علماء وأساتذة الدين بالأزهر منشغلين في النقاش حول مدى شرعية "مبايعة" رئيس الجمهورية أو استعمال كلمة مبايعة عند إعلان تأييد الرئيس، وذلك بعد أن قام شيخ الأزهر ووزير الأوقاف (وأيضا أئمة المساجد في مصر، على حد قول وزير الأوقاف) بإعلان مبايعتهم لمبارك. ويقول شيخ آخر (علي أبو الحسن) أن التصويت هو واجب شرعي على كل مواطن، فيما عدا "الفاسقين"، الذين يجب منعهم من التصويت.

الدكتور أيمن نور مرشح حزب الغد ما أن بدا الكلام على المنصة في المحلة الكبرى، إلا وسقطت به المنصة واصيب بجروح، ثم واصل كلامه بعد دقائق قليلة ليتهم الحزب الوطني بأنه دبر مؤامرة اسقاط المنصة. وقد هتف المؤيدون ضد الحزب الوطني بعد ذلك. في رأيي أن يقوم أيمن نور باتهام الحزب الوطني بالمسئولية عن حادث "المنصّة" هو تصرف طفولي!

أمَا نعمان جمعة، فرغم أن الزعماء يسعدون عادة بهتافات المناصرين والمؤيدين والمهللين، إلا ان جمعة لا يرتاح لضجيج كهذا فيصمت ويقطع حديثه ويبدو عليه الضيق أحياناً، فيكتم غضبه ويحملق في «الهتيفة» منتظراً أن يصمتوا ليستعيد ذاكرة الكلام، وفي احيان أخرى يطلب منهم السكوت والجلوس و"سماع الكلام".
في بورسعيد لم يفطن جمعة الى أن ميكروفوناً صغيراً ثبت في سترته وعندما ضج من اصرار أحدهم على مقاطعته بهتافات مؤيدة ابتعد عن حزمة الميكروفونات التي كانت امامه على المنضدة، واعتبر نفسه في أمان وأن احداً لن يسمعه ونادى على أحد مساعديه وقال له: "هو الواد ابن الخول ده محدش عارف يسكته؟"..
فوجئ جمعة بأن جمبع الحاضرين سمعوا شتيمته للأخ "الهتّيف"، فالكلمة التي استخدمها هي صفة يطلقها العامة على المثليين جنسياً، بل إنه فوجىء بأن العبارة سمعت في الفضائيات التي كانت تنقل مؤتمره على الهواء.
أما في اللقاء التالي في روض الفرج فقد حسم جمعة أمره وقرر أن يقول ما عنده سواء استمرت الهتافات أو توقفت.

Finally They Understand أخيرا فهموها

According to Tony Blair, finally some actions is being taken against some people who were always welcomed and tolerated in Britain, and they are none other than Islamic extremists, many of them who were wanted in other countries for terrorism. Only after Britain tasted terrorism did they realize that they were making a mistake all these years.

Blair said the government will adjust human rights related laws, making it easier to expel those who actively support and back terrorism. An example of the groups in question is Al-Mohajereen (The Immigrants) group, which gave the name "The 19 martyrs" to the 19 terrorists who executed the attacks on 9/11.

I find it surprising to know that 4 years after 9/11, a group like this is still tolerated in Britain.
Apart from the recent London bombings, we have seen examples in the past of what those people can do, like when Theo van Gogh got killed in Holland for expressing his opinion in his movie "Submission", which he made with a Dutch politician who had abandoned the Islamic faith, her birth faith.

I hope the rest of Europe will make a strong move against extremists and some immigrants who have no loyalty to those countries that protected them and tolerated them for many years, before what happened in Holland and Britain is repeated somewhere else.

طبقا لما قاله توني بلير، أخيرا سوف يقومون في بريطانيا بإجراءات ضد بعض الأفراد والجماعات التي كانت دائما مرحب بها في بريطانيا، وبالطبع المقصود أساسا هم متطرفين إسلاميين، الذين كان الكثير منهم مطلوبين في دول أخرى بتهمة الإرهاب. فقط بعض أن ذاقوا في بريطانيا طعم الإرهاب، فهموا أنهم كانوا مخطئين عندما رحبوا بهذه الأشكال طوال هذه السنوات.

بلير قال أن الحكومة سوف تقوم بتعديل قوانين متعلقة بحقوق الإنسان، مما يجعل طرد مؤيدي الإرهاب ممكنا. من هذه الجماعات جماعة إسمها "المهاجرين"، وقد قامت هذه الجماعة بتسمية إرهابيي 11 سبتمبر ب"الشهداء ال19".

أنا أجد أنه شيء غريب بعد 4 سنوات من أحداث 11 سبتمبر أن جماعة مثل هذه مازالت مسموح بوجودها في دولة مثل بريطانيا.
بخلاف تفجيرات لندن، رأينا أمثلة في الماضي على ما يفعله هؤلاء، مثل قتل ثيو فان جوخ لأنه قام بالتعبير عن رأيه في فيلم يمكن ترجمة إسمه ل"الخضوع" أو ربما "الإسلام"، وهو فيلم قام فان جوخ بعمله مع سياسية هولندية كانت مسلمة أصلا ولكنها تركت دينها.

يجب أن تقوم بقية أوروبا بتحرك قوي ضد المتطرفين أو بعض المهاجرين الذين لا ولاء لديهم لهذه الدول التي سمحت بوجودهم فيها طوال هذه السنين، قبل أن يتكرر ماحدث في هولندا ولندن في مكان آخر.

About the Terrorist Attack في موضوع الهجوم الإرهابي

About the terrorist attack that took place yesterday against Israeli-Arabs in Israel by an Israeli army deserter, it's probably the first time both Palestinians and Israelis refer to the same crime as a terrorist act... and of course the reason is clear. Had the victims been Jewish Israelis and the terrorist a Palestinian, we would have seen a different response... guess from which side??

What’s ironic and disgusting at the same time is that representatives of Palestinian groups, including Hamas, vowed to respond to this crime. Respond? Didn't they hear that the terrorist has already been killed? What else do they need to do, go blow up some Israelis in a bus that had nothing to do with the crime?

The Egyptian newspaper, Al-Ahram, also called the crime a "massacre"... well great... what about Palestinians blowing themselves up in the middle of Israeli civilians... when will you start calling that a massacre? Or does it depend on who is the criminal and who is the victim?

It's the double standards. I will look closely at how both sides react to future terrorist attacks and compare what the two sides say.

في موضوع الهجوم الإرهابي الذي قام به إسرائيلي متهرب من الخدمة العسكرية ضد عرب إسرائيل في أحد الأوتوبيسات بالأمس، من الممكن أن تكون هذه هي أوّل مرة يتفق فيها الإسرائيليون والفلسطينيون على تسمية حدث ما بأنه حدث إرهابي... وبالطبع السبب معروف. أما لو كان الضحايا إسرائيليين يهود والمنفّذ فلسطيني، كنا سنرى رد فعل مختلف من أحد الطرفين. خمِّن أيّ طرف!

الشيء المثير للسخرية والقرف في نفس الوقت أن ممثلي الجماعات الفلسطينية، ومن ضمنها حماس، توعّدت بالرد على الجريمة. شيء عجيب، أي رد يتحدثون عنه؟ ألم يعلموا أن الإرهابي قد تم قتله بالفعل؟ ماالذي يمكن أن يفعلوه الآن، تفجير أوتوبيس به إسرائيليين لا علاقة لهم بالجريمة؟

صحيفة الأهرام المصرية وصفت الجريمة بأنها "مجزرة". شيء عظيم، ولكن ماذا عن عمليات الفلسطينيين التفجيرية وسط المدنيين الإسرائيليين، متى ستسمّونها مجازر؟ أم أن التسمية تعتمد على هويّة الجاني والضحية؟

إنها المعايير المزدوجة. سوف أتابع باهتمام رد فعل الطرفين على أي عمليات إرهابية في المستقبل وأقارن!

The Gods of Hypocrisy – 2 آلهة النفاق - 2

Remember when I talked about “The Gods of Hypocrisy” in Egypt? Well it never ends. Pope Shenouda (The pope of the Coptic Orthodox Christians – the largest Christian denomination in Egypt) was interviewed by Al-Ahram news paper, the most popular government owned newspaper in Egypt. Most of the interview was about re-electing Mubarak for a 5th term. Here is a translation of some of what Pope Shenouda said in the interview, and my comments on them:

- About the opinion of the Coptic Orthodox leadership regarding re-electing Mubarak:
"All Coptic church leaders (The pope + 71 high ranking church officials) signed a document that supports president Husni Mubarak’s candidacy, because of his vast experience, and knowledge and good relations with all other presidents in Arab, western, and other countries. And for his wisdom and kindness, and for his accomplishments which no description will be enough to tell about them. And because of the freedom that he granted to his people, the freedom that some has used in a wrong manner"
(He refers to those who publicly oppose Mubarak… so his version of freedom is one that Mubarak grants to the people so he can be praised, but it cannot be used by the people to oppose mubarak. False freedom).

- About the opposition candidates for president:
"None of them can compete with Mubarak. If some have certain popularity, it’s in a very limited area, and it cannot rise in any way to the popularity of president Mubarak in the entire length and width of the country, a popularity that has been assured by time, reality, and history, and was supported by a personality that has nobility and highness"
(Yes , yes, he is talking about Mubarak’s personality).

- About Kefaya (Enough) movement and other opposition forces:
“Those groups could not have dared to act like this in the past before Husni Mubarak, not in Nasser’s time, and not in Sadat’s time. Is this the way they pay back this nobel man (Mubarak) who has not used his authority against them?”
(a7a… no comment).

- About having Coptic candidates for president: (I do not know if they are talking about Coptic Christians or Egyptian Christians in general):
“We do no agree to that, and no one does. A president is supposed to come from the religion of the majority of the population”.
(Blessings be on the second-class citizens).

- About problems facing Copts: (Again I do not know if they are talking about Coptic Christians or Egyptian Christians in general):
“This is not the current issue, and this is not the time for such a question. The issue now is supporting President Mubarak, not complaining”.

- His position on visiting Jerusalem:
“It is the same position which I have declared a long time ago, nothing has changed even though people and events have. I do not and will not enter Jerusalem except with my Muslim brothers, when the political situation have changed in a way that allows it. I still forbid Copts from visiting Jerusalem”.

As you can see, religious leaders keep putting their noses in politics. My opinion is that if they have a personal political opinion they can express it when they cast their vote, they should respect their positions and stay out of politics. The pope (as a pope) does not have the right to support a certain candidate for president, or to attack those who are against Mubarak and say they are abusing the freedom that Mubarak gave them. He does not have the right to say there can be no Coptic president in Egypt, because this is racist thinking. He also does not have the right to forbid Copts from visiting Jerusalem.

In other words, he does not have the right to mix politics with religion, and the same goes to all religious leaders in Egypt. There should be a separation between personal political opinions and public religious responsibilities.

The problem is the simple minded Egyptians who listen to every thing said by religious leaders. Those simple Egyptians will act without thinking about what is logical and what is not, or what is right or wrong. They simply do what the pope or the mufti or the imam says without thinking. The next thing you will hear is “God wants Mubarak to run for president” or “God wants me to vote for Mubarak… didn’t you hear what the pope said??”.

تكلمت في السابق عن آلهة النفاق في مصر، ولكن هذا الموضوع لا ينتهي أبدا، خصوصا في فترة الانتخابات.

منذ يوم أو يومين، البابا شنودة (بابا الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية، أكبر طائفة مسيحية في مصر) كان له لقاء مع جريدة الأهرام المملوكة للحكومة وذات الشعبية العالية. أغلب الحديث كان عن إعادة ترشيح مبارك لفترة خامسة. وهاهي بعض المقتطفات منقولة بالنص مما قاله البابا شنودة في اللقاء:

- عن رأي قيادات الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية في إعادة ترشيح مبارك:

البابا شنودة‏:‏ كل القيادات الكنسية القبطية (البابا و‏71‏ من المطارنة والأساقفة‏)‏ الجميع وقعوا علي وثيقة بترشيح وتأييد الرئيس حسني مبارك‏,‏ لما له من خبرة واسعة‏,‏ ومعرفة وعلاقة طيبة بكل رؤساء الدول في البلاد العربية والغربية وسائر البلاد الأخري‏,‏ ولحكمته وسماحته‏,‏ وإنجازاته التي لا يحصرها الوصف‏,‏ وما منحه لشعبه من حرية‏ (أساء البعض إستخدامها للأسف الشديد‏)‏

(يقصد هؤلاء الذين يعارضون رئاسة مبارك... إذن تعريفه للحرية هو الحرية التي يمنحها مبارك للشعب كي ينال المدح، ولكن هذه الحرية لا يحق للشعب أن يستخدمها في الاعتراض على مبارك. يعني حرية زائفة).

- عن مرشحي المعارضة:

البابا‏:‏ لا يوجد فيهم إطلاقا من ينافس الرئيس مبارك‏.‏ وإن كان البعض لهم شعبية معينة‏,‏ فإنها تكون في منطقة محدودة جدا‏,‏ ولا يمكن أن ترتفع بأي حال إلي شعبية الرئيس مبارك في طول البلاد وعرضها‏,‏ شعبية أكدها الزمن والواقع والتاريخ‏,‏ وساندتها شخصية لها سموها ورفعتها‏.‏
(أجل، أجل... إنه يتحدث عن شخصية مبارك).

- عن حركة كفاية والحركات المعارضة الأخرى:
البابا‏:‏ رأيي أن هؤلاء ما كانت لهم الجرأة أن يتصرفوا هكذا في عهد سابق لحسني مبارك‏,‏ لا في عهد جمال عبدالناصر ولا في عهد أنور السادات‏.‏ فهل هذا جزاء الرجل النبيل الذي لم يستخدم سلطته ضدهم؟‏!.‏
(أحّة... لا تعليق).

بالنسبة لترشيح "أقباط" لمنصب رئيس الجمهورية: (لا أعلم إذا كان المقصود الأقباط فعلا أم مسيحيو مصر بشكل عام

البابا‏:‏ نحن لا نوافق علي هذا‏,‏ ولا يوافق عليه أحد‏,‏ والمفروض في رئيس الدولة أن يكون من دين غالبية سكان الوطن‏.‏
(إذن لتحل البركة على مواطني الدرجة الثانية)

عن المشاكل الخاصة بالأقباط: (مرة أخرى لا أعلم إذا كان المقصود الأقباط فعلا أم مسيحيو مصر بشكل عام
البابا‏:‏ ليس الآن مجال هذا السؤال‏,‏ ولا وقته‏.‏ نحن الآن في مجال تأييد الرئيس مبارك‏,‏ لا في مجال الشكوي‏.‏

موقفه من زيارة الأقباط للقدس:
البابا‏:‏ هو نفس موقفي الذي أعلنته منذ زمن‏..‏ لم يتغير قط بتغير الأحداث والأشخاص‏,‏ وهو أنني لا أدخل القدس إلا مع أخوتي المسلمين‏,‏ حينما تكون الأوضاع السياسية تغيرت بشكل يسمح بهذا‏.‏ومازال تحريمي للأقباط من زيارة القدس قائما‏..‏

كما ترون، القادة الدينيون مازالوا يحشرون أنوفهم في السياسة. رأيي أنهم لو كان لديهم رأي سياسي شخصي من الممكن أن يعبروا عنه عن طريق الاقتراع في الانتخابات فقط، لأنهم من المفروض أن يحترموا مناصبهم ويبقوا خارج اللعبة السياسية.

البابا، (بصفته البابا وليس بصفته الشخصية)، ليس لديه الحق في أن يؤيد مرشّح معيّن للرئاسة، أو أن يهاجم المعترضين على ترشيح مبارك ويقول أنهم يسيئون استعمال الحرية التي "منحها" لهم مبارك. ليس لديه الحق أيضا أن يعترض على أن يكون المرشح للرئاسة قبطيا لأن هذا التفكير عنصري، أو الحق في أن يمنع الأقباط دون غيرهم من الناس من زيارة القدس.

بمعنى أخر، هو ليس لديه الحق في أن يخلط السياسة بالدين، ونفس الكلام ينطبق على كل القادة الدينيين في مصر. يجب أن يكون هناك فصل بين الآراء السياسية الشخصية وبين المسئوليات الدينية العامة.

المشكلة أيضا تشمل بسطاء العقول في مصر الذين يسمعون ويصدّقون كل ما يقوله المتحدثون بإسم الدين. هؤلاء البسطاء سيتصرفون ويتخذون قراراتهم بدون التفكير فيما يتماشى أو يتعارض مع المنطق، أو ما هو الخطأ وما هو الصواب. إنهم ببساطة يفعلون ما يقوله البابا أو المفتي أو الإمام بدون أن يشغّلوا عقولهم. مش بعيد نسمع إللي يقول "ربنا عايز مبارك يترشح للرئاسة"، أو "ده ربنا عايزني أدي صوتي لمبارك... إنت ماسمعتش البابا قال إيه؟؟".

Party Presidents and Elections رؤساء الأحزاب والانتخابات

The weird thing about the coming elections is this: Since they began accepting applications for presidential candidates few days ago, most of the people who applied (6 out of 7) were presidents of different political parties, including Husni Mubarak, who is the president of the National Democratic Party.

The new election law says that parties must choose their candidates for president from the "leadership council" (or something like that) of each party, which includes the president and the party, and it means that other regular party members cannot run for president.

Now why is 6 out of 7 who applied until now are party presidents and not any one else from their parties' "leadership councels"? It is because in Egypt the culture of leadership combines all powers and responsibilities in one position - or one person. We still need to learn about dividing responsibilities and powers between different positions.

Just because someone is a president of a political party does not mean that person should be running for president on behalf of the party, in fact, managing a political party is enough reponsibility for one person. Each party should have a party president, and potential candidates for the presidential elections... if the party president wants to run in the country’s presidential elections, they should resign and focus on their presidential campaign, because they will have no time to manage both. Am I right or what? Why should I vote for a president of a political party who wants to combine different kinds of unrelated responsibilities or powers? What does that tell you about their future leadership?

الشيء الغريب في الانتخابات القادمة هو أنهم منذ بدأوا في تلقي إستمارات الترشيح للإنتخابات الرئاسية منذ بضعة أيام، فإن أغلب الأشخاص الذين تقدموا للترشيح (6 من أصل 7) هم رؤساء أحزاب، ومن ضمنهم حسني مبارك، رئيس الحزب الوطني الديموقراطي.

قانون الانتخابات الجديد ينص على أن الأحزاب يمكنها أن ترشح لمنصب رئيس الجمهورية أي شخص من أعضاء الهيئة العليا أو لجنة قيادة كل حزب، وهذا يشمل رئيس الحزب. هذا يعني أن الحزب لا يمكن أن يرشح أي عضو خارج هذه الهيئة.

لماذا إذن يوجد 6 رؤساء أحزاب من ضمن السبع أشخاص الذين تقدموا للترشيح، وليس أي شخص آخر من الهيئات العليا لهذه الأحزاب؟ السبب هو ثقافة القيادة أو الرئاسة السائدة في مصر، والتي تجمع كل السلطات والمسئوليات في منصب واحد لشخص واحد. ما زلنا نحتاج أن نتعلم تقسيم وتوزيع المسئولية والسلطات بين المناصب المختلفة.

لمجرد أن شخص ما هو رئيس حزب سياسي لا يعني أن هذا الشخص هو الذي يجب أن يمثل الحزب في الانتخابات، بل بالعكس، فإن إدارة حزب سياسي هي مسئولية أكثر من كافية لشخص واحد. كل حزب يجب أن يكون لديه رئيسا للحزب، و مرشحون آخرون للإنتخابات الرئاسية... إذا أراد رئيس الحزب أن يرشح نفسه في الإنتخابات الرئاسية للدولة، فيجب عليه أن يقدم استقالته أولا من منصب رئيس الحزب كي يتفرغ لإدارة حملته الانتخابية. هل هذا الكلام صحيح أم لا؟ لماذا أدلي بصوتي لصالح رئيس حزب يريد أن يجمع بين مسئوليات أو سلطات غير مرتبطة ببعضها؟ ماذا الذي يمكن أن نستنتجه عن نوعية القيادة التي سنراها من هؤلاء في المستقبل؟

Fighting Decentralized Terrorism محاربة الإرهاب اللامركزي

It seems that al Qaeda is now operating in a different way, it is now decentralized, which means that its cells around the world are working autonomusly and in isolation without a central command or a direct communication with al Qaeda leaders. It also means that anyone can form a small group of people who have the same idealogy of al Qaeda to conduct terror attacks, like the ones that happened in the last few weeks.

How will that affect the effort against terrorism? Well, since the cells are isolated, if you arrest the people in one cell, it will be harder to get information about other cells, even in the same country. If a top al Qaeda leader is arrested, they will not have the same kind of information about the cells that they would have had if al Qaeda was centralized. Security/law enforcement agencies should concentrate on some methods of fighting terrorism without any hesitation, including:

- Keep a close watch on places where potential terrorists are likely to meet or be recruited, including religious and prayer locations around the world. Also, you should consider it a crime to preach hate and war messages to the people in these locations.

- After you are able to prove or when someone admits they are a member of a terrorist organization or group, start adopting interrogation techniques that will force them to spit out all the information they have. This information could and will save lives.

- Prevent messages from al Qaeda leaders that are delivered through the media, such as the messages that appear on Al-Jazeera. Those messages are important in a decentralized enviroment and could be their only method of communication. They can trigger terror attacks, or give confidence to terrorist cells.

- Finish the job in Iraq as soon as possible (create a strong army/police, a constitution and an elected government) and get out. The foreign military presence in Iraq makes recruiting terrorists very easy, because it gives too many people a reason to attack the west and their allies in the Middle East, regardless of whether that military presence has served Iraq and its people or not.

Of course a lot has to follow, but these are just few fundamental methods to fight terrorism.

يبدو أن منظمة القاعدة الآن تعمل بشكل مختلف، فهي الآن في حالة "لا مركزية"، مما يعني أن مجموعاتها حول العالم تعمل بشكل ذاتي بدون قيادة مركزية أو إتصال مباشر مع قيادات القاعدة. هذا أيضا يعني أن أي شخص من الممكن أن يكوِّن مجموعة من الأشخاص الذين لهم نفس فكر القاعدة للقيام بعمليات إ رهابية، مثل العمليات التي جرت في الأسابيع الأخيرة.

المراقبة عن كثب لبعض الأماكن التي يمكن أن تحدث فيها لقاءات بين إرهابيين محتملين أو التي يمكن لقيادات المجموعات الإرهابية العثور فيها على أفراد لمجموعاتهم، وهذه الأماكن تشمل المواقع الدينية وأماكن العبادة حول العالم. ويجب أيضا إعتبارها جريمة أن يكون هناك أي خطاب ديني صادر من هذه الأماكن يدعو للكراهية والحرب.

بعد أن تثبت أن شخصا ما هو عضو في مجموعة أو منظمة إرهابية، أو بعد أن يعترف ذلك الشخص بهذا، إبدأ إستعمال أساليب للتحقيق تُجبر ذلك الشخص على أن يدلي بكل المعلومات التي لديه. هذه المعلومات سوف تنقذ حياة الأبرياء.

إمنع الرسائل الصادرة عن قيادات القاعدة والتي يتم إرسالها عن طريق الإعلام، مثل تلك التي تعرضها قناة الجزيرة. تلك الرسائل مهمة في بيئة لامركزية، وقد تكون الطريقة الوحيدة للاتصال بين القيادة والمجموعات المختلفة، ومن الممكن أن تتسبب في حدوث هجمات إرهابية، أو تعطي للمجموعات الإرهابية شيء من الثقة.

الولايات المتحدة يجب أن تنتهي من الحرب في العراق بأسرع وقت ممكن (تكوين جيش وشرطة قوية، ودستور وحكومة مُنتخبة)، ثم مغادرة العراق. الوجود العسكري الأجنبي في العراق يجعل العثور على إرهابيين جُدد مسألة سهلة، لأن هذا الوجود العسكري يعطي سببا للكثيرين لمهاجمة الغرب وحلفاؤه في الشرق الأوسط، بغض النظر عن كون هذا الوجود العسكري قد أدّى خدمة للعراق وشعبه أم لا.

بالتأكيد يوجد المزيد من الأساليب لمحاربة الإرهاب غير التي ذكرتها، ولكن ما ذكرته هو بعض الأساليب الأساسية

I had just started a few days break away from home and reality when I heard about the terrorist attacks in Sharm al-Sheikh. Even when you are far from where these attacks take place, you can’t hear about them without wondering if someone you know got killed or hurt, or if other attacks are about to follow. I just came back and I am trying to hear the latest news as I am writing this.

All I can say now is that people in Egypt, and everywhere, need to make a strong moral stand against terrorism.
There are no buts and no ifs. Terrorism is terrorism.
Terrorism can't easily grow without people's support or sympathy, whether it’s active or silent.
I would like to say to some people: If you are sympathetic or a supporter to terrorism in any form, or if you are selective in what you call terrorism depending on where it's taking place or who is getting killed, then you are a part of the problem and you need to fix yourself, because there is no guarantee that you or someone you care about won't be the victim one day.

كنت في بداية أجازة صغيرة بعيدا عن الواقع عندما جائني خبر عمليات شرم الشيخ الإرهابية. حتى عندما تكون بعيدا عن مثل هذه الهجمات فإنك لا بد أن تتسائل إذا كان من ضمن القتلى والجرحى من تعرفهم، أو إذا كانت هناك هجمات أخرى على وشك الحدوث. لقد عُدت منذ قليل وأحاول أن سماع آخر الأخبار أثناء كتابتي لهذا الكلام.

كل ما أستطيع أن أقوله الآن أنّ الناس في مصر، وفي أي مكان، يجب عليهم القيام بوقفة أخلاقية ضد الإرهاب.
لا يوجد "لكن" ولايوجد "إذا". الإرهاب هو الإرهاب.
الإرهاب لا يمكنه أن ينمو بسهولة بدون تأييد الشعوب أو تعاطفها معه، سواء كان هذا التأييد والتعاطف صامتا أو عملياً.
أحب أن أقول لبعض الناس: إذا كنت متعاطفا أو مؤيدا للإرهاب بأي شكل، أو إذا كانت تسمية الإرهاب لديك تعتمد على هوية القتلى أو أين وقعت أي عملية إرهابية، فأنت جزء من المشكلة وعليك أن تصلح من نفسك، لأنه لا يوجد ضمان لك أو للأشخاص الذين يهمك أمرهم بعدم وقوعكم ضحايا للإرهاب في يوم ما

هذا هو العلم الذي أختار أن أرفعه اليوم، 23 يوليو

The flag above is Egypt’s flag when it was a kingdom before 1952/1953. The 23rd of July’s coup (or revolution as they call it) is celebrated yearly in Egypt.

Egypt’s situation today is a result of the military coup that took place against the king on the 23rd of July 1952, after which the army took control of the country to this day. The army officers who lead this coup (which they called a revolution) promised the people to get rid of a lot of negatives, such as bribery, corruption, and foreign occupation (Egypt was under the British occupation at that time). But as time has shown: those army officers, who were in total control of the country after the coup, became the very thing they swore to destroy.

Notice that I am not doing a comparison between this military republic and the old kingdom… I am just comparing between the promises those army officers made, and the reality they brought. Promises... and reality.

Bribery and corruption are alive and in a good health, and still growing to this day. The British occupation ended, but was replaced by the army’s occupation of the political arena in Egypt. Dictatorship, State Security, local intelligence against the opposition, censorship against ideas and opinions, torture, and government-controlled media became the norm to this day. Their failure to deal with the constant increase in the population until the present time (due to the lack of education and development to people in suburban and rural areas) ate up all the revenues from economical developments and projects that were conducted after the coup. They lead the country to a lost war with Israel in 1967 when the army was unprepared. To this day Middle East live the political and economic outcomes of that war.

And the story goes on and on and it is not over yet - and we don’t know when will it change to a better situation… or when will it hit the bottom.

And that is why on this day and on this anniversary, I choose to raise this flag. By the way, do you know what the flag above symbolizes? I will talk about that later.

العَلم الذي تراه بالأعلى هو عَلم مصر عندما كانت مملكة قبل عامي 1952 و 1953. كما هو معروف، إنقلاب 23 يوليو (أو الثورة كما يسمونه) يتم الاحتفال به كل عام في مصر.

إن وضع مصر في وقتنا الحالي هو نتيجة للإنقلاب العسكري الذي حدث ضد الحكم الملكي في 23 يوليو 1952، والذي سيطر الجيش بعد حدوثه على مقاليد الحكم في البلاد. ضباط الجيش الذين قادوا هذا الانقلاب أعطوا وعدا للشعب بالتخلص من الكثير من السلبيات، مثل الرشوة، والفساد، والاحتلال الأجنبي (مصر كانت تحت الاحتلال البريطاني في ذلك الوقت). ولكن كما أثبت الزمن... هؤلاء الضباط، الذين أصبحوا مسيطرين بشكل تام على الحكم، إعتنقوا نفس الصفات التي وعدوا بتخليص الوطن منها.

لاحظ أنني لا أقارن بين هذه الجمهورية العسكرية والمملكة المصرية... أنني فقط أقارن بين الوعود التي قدّمها هؤلاء الضباط، وبين الواقع الذي تسببوا فيه. الوعود... والواقع.

الرشوة والفساد مازالا على قيد الحياة وبصحة جيّدة، ومازالا أيضا في حالة نموّ حتى هذا اليوم. إنتهى الاحتلال البريطاني في الخمسينات، ولكن تمّ استبداله باحتلال الجيش للحياة السياسية في مصر. الديكتاتورية، ومباحث أمن الدولة، والمخابرات الداخلية ضد أعداء النظام، والرقابة على الفكر والرأي، والتعذيب، وسيطرة الحكومة على الإعلام، كل هذا أصبح هوالوضع الطبيعي حتى اليوم. كل المشاريع والتطورات الاقتصادية التي قاموا بها أكلتها الزيادة السكانية التي فشلوا في التعامل معها بسبب ضعف أو إنعدام التعليم والتطوير في الأرياف وفي جنوب مصر. قادوا البلد إلى حرب خاسرة مع إسرائيل في 1967 عندما لم يكن الجيش مستعدا لها. تلك الحرب التي مازالت المنطقة تعاني من آثارها السياسية والاقتصادية.

وغيره كتير... والقصة مازالت مستمرة في وقتنا الحاضر، ولا نعلم متى ستتغير للأفضل... أو متى ستصطدم بالقاع.

وبسبب كل هذا فإن هذا هو العَلم الذي أختار أن أرفعه اليوم في هذه الذكرى . بالمناسبة، هل تعلم إلى ماذا يرمز العَلم الذي أرفعه بأعلى المقال؟ سوف أتحدث عن هذا في وقت لاحق

* Some rumors in Egypt are suggesting that Ihab al-Sherif (Egypt's ambassador to Iraq who is believed to be murdered) could be still alive. The main reason of course is that his body hasn't been found yet, and that his murder was not videotaped or broadcasted by the terrorists like previous murders. Egypt's foreign minister said that the chance of El Sherif being alive is small.

See this guy? That's 70 years old Mohammed El Amir Atta, father of 9/11 terrorist Mohamed Atta. In his apartment in Giza, Egypt, he just told a CNN crew that he would like to see more attacks like the ones that took place in London. He also said that the attacks on the USA and Britain are the beginning of a religious war that will last for 50 years?? When he was asked for an interview, he said he would do it for $5,000, and that he would give away this money to finance another terrorist attack! Of course they didn't do it.

Yup, and he is living in Egypt like any normal citizen.

But compare that to what he said in September 2002, a year after the 9/11 attacks:

In 2002, he said that his son is still alive and denied the son's participation in 9/11 attacks (he even called them atrocities), and instead, he blamed it on... American Christians.

Quite a change in views... If you ask me, I believe that since he declared his intention to finance terrorism, whether he is actually capable doing it or not, he should be harassed and monitored by the Egyptian authorities because he is a potential sponsor of terrorism. Egypt needs to do something useful with the 24-year old emergency law for a change, instead of using it to attack the political opposition. ِIf people in Egypt are monitored, harassed, and arrested just because they demand political reform, shouldn't this person who promised to finance terrorism be subjected to at least the same treatment?

Update:
Today, 7/21, new terror attacks occured in London, and also Mohammed El Amir Atta denied talking to the CNN crew, supporting the London bombings, or financing future terror attacks. I tend to believe the CNN story because it makes sense if we take into consideration Atta's statements after 9/11.

هل ترى ذلك الشخص بالصورة؟ إنه محمد الأمير عطا، 70 عاما، وهو والد محمد عطا، أحد إرهابيي 11 سبتمبر. في شقته في الجيزة، قام لتوّه بالتحدث مع طاقم سي إن إن وقال لهم أنه يود أن يرى المزيد من الهجمات الإرهابية مثل التي حدثت مؤخرا في لندن (هو طبعا لم يستخدم لفظ "إرهابية"). وقال أيضا أن الهجمات على الولايات المتحدة وعلى بريطانيا هي بداية لحرب دينية ستستمر ل 50 سنة؟؟ أماعندما طلب الطاقم إجراء حوار تسجيلي، قال أنه على استعداد لفعل ذلك مقابل 5000 دولار وأنه لن يحتفظ بالمبلغ لنفسه، وإنما سيستخدمه لتمويل عملية إرهابية أخرى!

ويعيش هذا الشخص في مصر كأي مواطن عادي.

ولكن قارن هذا الكلام مع ما قاله في سبتمبر 2002، بعد عام من هجمات 11 سبتمبر:

في 2002، قال أن ابنه مازال على قيد الحياة، ونفى أي علاقة له بهجمات 11 سبتمبر (وحتى وصفها بأنها أعمال شريرة)، وإدعى أن من قام بالهجمات في 11 سبتمبر هم...... مسيحيون أمريكيين.

ياله من تغيير شديد في الرأي. أنا شخصيا أرى أنه بما أن هذا الشخص قد أعلن صراحة عن نيته بتمويل عمليات إرهابية، بغض النظر عن كونه قادرا على فعل ذلك أو لا، فإنه يتوجب على السلطات في مصر تعريضه للإزعاج والمراقبة الأمنية بسبب كونه مُموّل مُحتمل للإرهاب. إن قانون الطواريء الذي بدأ استعماله منذ 24 عاما يجب أن يتم استخدامه فيما ينفع، وليس كما يُستخدم اليوم لإجهاض المعارضة السياسية. وإذا كان الناس في مصر يتعرضون للمضايقة والاعتقال والمراقبة لمجرد كونهم معارضين سياسيين مطالبين بالإصلاح، ألا يجب أن يتعرض هذا الشخص الذي وعد بتمويل الإرهاب لنفس المعاملة على الأقل؟

Few days ago I viewed my blog in Internet Explorer for the first time... and it was a disaster: Representation of the Arabic parts do not appear the way they should, although all the text was there. English parts contained pieces of code that are not supposed to appear on the page, and I had to change the code in my previous posts to remove those parts.

I have always viewed this page using FireFox and it looked good. If the choice is between Internet Explorer and FireFox, I would definitly recommend FireFox, especially if you are here to read the Arabic parts. In both cases, you should use the Unicode (UTF-8) character encoding. Not Western, not Arabic, not anything else.

As for the comments, I am using Haloscan. I just changed the comments encoding to Unicode (UTF-8), which will fix a problem with Arabic comments. Now both English and Arabic comments can be up to 2000 characters.

And if you face any problems in browsing my blog, let me know.

Know Your True Enemy إعرف عدوك الحقيقي

Isn’t it about time for the Palestinian people to know who their real enemy is?

Palestinian groups that call themselves “resistance groups” are continuing to attack civilian Israeli targets. “Hamas” is still bombing the settlements with rockets, and “Islamic Jihad” recently carried out two attacks, one in a mall and one in a settlement in West Bank, resulting in the death and injury of numerous civilians. The latest developments also include clashes between members of these organizations and Palestinian police resulting in killing and injuring several people.

All of this happens while Israel is about to implement its pullout plan to leave Gaza and dismantle its settlements there. The results of those terrorist attacks are known in advance: Israel will do what it can to prevent terrorist attacks on its people. They will retaliate by targeting leaders of those organizations, attacking locations that are used to develop bombs and rockets, and move its army into Gaza to prepare for possible ground operations. The results also include shutting the borders to prevent terrorists from entering Israel, causing thousands of Palestinians not to be able to enter Israel to work.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad know very well that all of this happened tens of times in the past and will continue to happen in the future as long as such attacks are being conducted, and they also know that the Palestinian people are the first to suffer, and that this repetition is the main reason for not achieving peace until now, but these organizations keep doing it over and over as if (or because) they don’t wish to see an end to the conflict.

But that is not all, every now and then we hear one of their leaders saying that they will accept peace with Israel as a temporary solution, and that their ultimate goal is the elimination of Israel, which means that these organizations are promising the Palestinian people with more wars, death, and destruction in the years that follow the final peace agreement with Israel.

Because of all this I ask again: Isn’t it about time for the Palestinian people to know who their real enemy is?

ألم يحن الوقت لأن يعرف الشعب الفلسطيني من هم أعدائه الحقيقيون؟

المنظمات الفلسطينية التي تطلق على نفسها "المقاومة" مايزالوا مستمرين في مهاجمة أهداف مدنية إسرائيلية. "حماس" مازالت تقصف المستوطنات الاسرائيلية بالصواريخ، و"الجهاد الاسلامي" قامت مؤخرا بعمليتين أحدهما في سوق تجاري والأخرى في مستوطنة في الضفة الغربية، مما أدى لجرح وقتل عدد من المدنيين. آخر التطورات تتضمن مواجهات مسلحة بين أعضاء من حماس والشرطة الفلسطينية أدت لوقوع قتلى وجرحى.

كل هذا يحدث في الوقت الذي تستعد فيه إسرائيل لتنفيذ الانسحاب من غزة وتفكيك مستوطناتها هناك. ولكن نتائج هذه العمليات الارهابية التي ذكرتها معروفة مقدما: إسرائيل ستتخذ إجراءات تمنع بها هذه الهجمات. سيقومون باستهداف عدد من قيادات هذه الجماعات قد يكون لهم علاقة بالهجمات. سيقومون أيضا بمهاجمة المواقع (أو الورش) التي تقوم بإنتاج الصواريخ والقنابل التي تستخدم في هذه الهجمات. سيحركون وحدات عسكرية من الجيش إلى قطاع غزة للاستعداد لاحتمال القيام بعملية عسكرية برية. ولمنع الارهابيين من التسلل لإسرائيل سيقومون بإغلاق الحدود مع غزة ، مما سيمنع أيضا الآلاف من العمال الفلسطينيين من دخول إسرائيل للعمل.

حماس والجهاد الاسلامي تعرفان جيدا أن نفس هذا السيناريو حدث في الماضي عشرات المرات وسيتكرر حدوثه في المستقبل طالما أن الهجمات التي يقومون بها ستستمر. وهم يعلمون أيضا أن الشعب الفلسطيني وليس غيره هو المتضرر الأكبر من هذه الأحداث... وأن هذا التكرار المستمر هو السبب الرئيسي لعدم تحقيق السلام حتى الآن... ولكن هذه المنظمات تكرر ما تقوم به كأنهم (أو لأنهم) لا يريدون أن ينتهي الصراع.

ولكن هذا ليس كل ما في الموضوع... كل فترة يخرج علينا أحد قادة هذه المنظمات ليقول أنهم سيقبلون بالسلام مع إسرائيل كنوع من الحل المؤقت فقط، وأن هدفهم النهائي هو القضاء على إسرائيل، أي أنهم يعطون وعدا للشعب الفلسطيني بالمزيد من الحرب والموت والخراب حتى بعد التوصل لاتفاق سلام نهائي مع إسرائيل.

وبسبب كل هذا فأنا أعود وأسأل: ألم يحن الوقت لأن يعرف الشعب الفلسطيني من هم أعدائه الحقيقيون؟

There is No Hope لا يوجد أمل

A lot is going on these days, like the terrorist attacks in London, Baghdad, and Natanya, and how the people’s rhetoric about terrorism changes depending on who is affected, and also depending on whether or not those people let their minds be controlled by certain kinds of unobjective media.

But the thing that made me feel there is no hope for change in Egypt is this:

As you know Egypt has a compulsory army service (draft) for males who meet a certain criteria, and it has a minimum duration of 9 months. Males can also volunteer to join the army and in that case the army will be their career. As for females there is no draft but certain positions are open to them, such as nursing, administrative and secretarial positions.
One of the newly established political parties in Egypt suggested that women should be allowed to volunteer for the army draft and should have the same responsibilities and training that men have, such as weapon and combat training. Note that the idea is for allowing voluntary draft, which means only those women who choose to volunteer will be drafted.

What was the response? Parliament members, including female members, refused the idea completely, and stated several reasons for their refusal:
- “This idea is against the rules and traditions of society”
- “…against the nature of Eastern societies”
- “…especially in the conservative south, which does not permit the woman to have hard jobs or jobs that are not compatible with the physical formation of a woman”.
- “Egypt and its people refuse to be a copy of the USA and Israel or other countries that puts the woman in these position that does fit with her nature and the traditions of the Egyptian family, the traditions which protects against any attempt of “unveiling” or imitation of the west”

The problem is not their refusal for drafting women, as I said it is voluntary, but the problem is the fact that they refuse to give women the right to choose, they want all people to live their lives the way they were told to live it by their families and the society. What if some people are sick of your backward rules and traditions and they do not believe in them any more? What if people want to choose to live their lives their way, and not yours? How will other women having army training affect the way you live your life? You have your life, and they have theirs. Why does the whole society have to live and behave the same way? Can’t we have some diversity? Isn't accepting diversity a part of "civilization" and being civil?

The idea of the society controlling the individuals is what culturally enslaves people and ends their ability to use their minds to decide what is right for them and what is not… and it is why I feel there is no hope for any kind of change here in the near future, because the people are not changing, and it is not only a question of draft for women, but the same kind of control prevents any change when it comes to the rights of individuals and their uniqueness.

أحداث كثيرة هذه الأيام، مثل الهجمات الإرهابية في لندن وبغداد ونتانيا، وكيف تختلف مواقف الناس من هذه الأحداث حسب من المتضرر من هذه الهجمات، وأيضا على حسب الدرجة التي يسمح بها هؤلاء الناس لبعض الجهات الإعلامية بالتحكم في عقولهم بالتغطية الإخبارية الغير موضوعية للأحداث.

ولكن الشيء الذي جعلني أشعر أنه لا يوجد أمل للتغيير في مصر هو هذا الموضوع:

كما تعلمون مصر بها تجنيد إجباري للذكور الذين تنطبق عليهم شروط معينة، ومدة هذا التجنيد هي 9 أشهر على الأقل. الذكور أيضا يمكنهم التطوع في الجيش وفي هذه الحالة يصبح الجيش هو مجال عملهم. بالنسبة للإناث لا يوجد تجنيد، ولكن بعض الأعمال في الجيش متاحة لهم، مثل التمريض، والأعمال الإدارية والسكرتارية.
أحد الأحزاب المنشأة مؤخرا طرح فكرة أن يتم السماح للنساء بالتجنيد الاختياري، وأن يكون لهن نفس المسؤليات والتدريب الذي يتلقاه الرجال، مثل التدريب على الأسلحة والمعارك. لاحظ أن الفكرة هي السماح بالتجنيد الاختياري للنساء، أي أنه سيتم تطبيقها على من يتطوعن لها فقط، وليس على جميع النساء.

ماذا كان الرد على هذه الفكرة؟ أعضاء مجلس الشعب، ومن ضمنهم نساء، رفضوا الفكرة بشكل تام، وذكروا المبررات التالية:
"هذه الفكرة ضد قواعد وتقاليد المجتمع"

"...ضد طبيعة المجتمع الشرقي"

"...خصوصا في مناطق الصعيد المحافظة، والتي لا تسمح للمرأة بأن تنخرط في أعمال شاقة تتعارض مع تكوين المرأة"

"مصر وشعبها يرفضون أن يكونوا نسخة من الولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل ودول أخرى تضع المرأة في هذه المواقع التي تتعارض مع طبيعتها وتقاليد الأسرة المصرية، التقاليد التي تحميها ضد أي محاولة للسفور أو التقليد للغرب"

المشكلة ليست أنهم يرفضون فكرة تجنيد المرأة، لأن التجنيد كما ذكرت إختياري، إنما المشكلة هي أنهم يرفضون إعطاء المرأة حق الاختيار... يريدون جميع الناس أن يعيشوا حياتهم طبقا لإملاءات المجتمع. ولكن ماذا لو كان بعض الناس يشعرون بالقرف من التقاليد المتخلفة ولا يؤمنون بها؟ ماذا لو أراد الناس أن يعيشون بأسلوبهم، وليس بأسلوبكم أنتم؟ كيف ستؤثر النساء اللاتي يردن الانخراط في التجنيد العسكري على حياتكم؟ أنتم لكم حياتكم الخاصة بكم، وهن لهن حياتهن الخاصة بهن. لماذا يجب على المجتمع بكامله أن يعيش ويتصرف بنفس الطريقة؟ ألا يمكن أن يكون عندنا نوع من التنوع والاختلاف؟ أليست هذه سمة من سمات "الحضارة" والتحضر؟

إن تحكم المجتمع في الأفراد هو ما يؤدي إلى استعباد ثقافي للناس وينهي قدرتهم على استخدام عقولهم لتحديد مايناسبهم ومالا يناسبهم... ولهذا أنا أشعر أنه لايوجد أمل لحدوث تغيير أو تطور في مصر في المستقبل القريب، لأن الناس لاتريد أن تتغير، وأنا لا أتكلم عن مشكلة تجنيد النساء فقط بل بشكل عام، لأن نفس هذا التحكم يمنع أي نوع من التطوير فيما يتعلق بحقوق الفرد وتميزه عن الآخرين

Here is how Egyptians reacted to killing the ambassador in Iraq. Other than what the Mufti said, I didn't see or hear any thing I didn't expect.

- Many parliament members, political parties and groups said it was wrong to send the ambassador to Iraq in the first place, and even to recognize the new Iraqi government since Iraq is still under occupation (In other words they say that Egypt gave an excuse for the killers). They also criticized the government for having strong ties with the USA and for trying to improve relations with Israel.
In contrast, not much was said about lack of security for the ambassador.

- Some said the group that killed the ambassador is a terrorist group that gives a bad name for other “legitimate resistance groups” that fight the Americans and the Iraqi security forces. So their main focus is that it is still alright in their opinion to target American forces and what they consider to be Iraqi “traitors” who serve in the government and the new security forces.

- The Egyptian Mufti (the official Islamic advisor in Egypt who says what is religiously permitted and what is not) went as far as saying that killing the ambassador is considered by Allah a far greater crime than demolishing the Kaaba (that’s the holiest Islamic spot, it’s in Mecca, Saudi Arabia). For me this was a first really, the Mufti never said any thing like that about the daily murder of Iraqi civilians or other murders around the world, like for example the genocide in Sudan by Arab militias against the people of Darfur.

- Zaghloul el-Naggar, a professor who talks too much about religion said that the Israeli intelligence (Mossad) are the ones who killed the ambassador, and he also claimed they are responsible for the rest of the assassinations taking place in Iraq. He said that it is impossible for the kidnappers and killers in Iraq to be Muslims, simply because it is against the principles of Islam. (Hmmm, did he just wake up from a 10-year comma or something?).
The problem with this person is that many of the Egyptians (who believe any thing that comes in the name of religion) respect him and believe what he says, so even though his claims are unfounded, it will be considered the truth for those kinds of people.

As for me, I clearly stated my opinion about this issue in two previous posts:

- After the kidnapping occured I complained about the lack of security for the ambassador.
- After he was killed, here is what I had to say.

هذا هو رد الفعل في مصر بشكل عام لقتل السفير المصري في العراق. فيما عدا ما قاله المفتي، لم أرى أو أسمع شيء لم أتوقعه.

- الكثير من أعضاء مجلس الشعب والأحزاب والحركات السياسية، إشتركوا في رأي شبه موحد وهو أنه كان من الخطأ إرسال السفير للعراق، وحتى الاعتراف بالحكومة العراقية بما أن العراق ما زال تحت الاحتلال (أي أنهم يقولون أن مصر أعطت العذر للقتلة). وقد قاموا بانتقاد الحكومة (بالمرة) لوجود علاقات جيدة مع الولايات المتحدة و لمحاولات تحسين العلاقات مع إسرائيل.
بالمقارنة، لم يتم التركيز على مشكلة الأمن أو الحراسة للسفير.

- البعض قال أن الجماعة التي قتلت السفير هي جماعة إرهابية تسيء بهذا الفعل ل"جماعات المقاومة المشروعة" التي تحارب الأمريكيين وقوات الأمن العراقية. أي تركيزهم كان على شرعية استهداف القوات الأمريكية ومن يعتبرونهم عراقيون "خونة" لأنهم يعملون في الحكومة الجديدة أو في قوات الأمن العراقية المشكلة حديثا.

- المفتي في مصر كان كريما هذه المرة وقال أن الله يعتبر قتل السفير جريمة أكبر بكثير من هدم الكعبة (وهي أقدس الأماكن عند المسلمين). هذا الكلام جديد تماما بالنسبة لي شخصيا، حيث لم أسمع المفتي يقول هذا الكلام تعليقا على جرائم القتل اليومية التي يواجهها العراقيون، أو جرائم القتل في أماكن أخرى في العالم ومنها ما هو قريب جدا، مثل عملبات الإبادة التي قامت بها الميليشيات العربية الموالية للحكومة السودانية والتي تعرض لها سكان إقليم دارفور.

- زغلول النجار، أستاذ جامعي إعتاد التحدث في الدين أكثر من اللازم، قال أن من قتل السفير هو الموساد الاسرائيلي، وادعى أيضا أن الموساد مسئول عن بقية عمليات الخطف والقتل في العراق. وقد قال أيضا أنه من المستحيل أن يكون الخاطفون والقتلة في العراق من المسلمين لسبب بسيط وهو أن هذه العمليات ضد تعاليم الأساسية للإسلام. (هو كان في غيبوبة العشر سنين اللي فاتوا والا حاجة؟).
المشكلة أن الكثير من المصريين الذين يصدقون أي شيء يقال لهم بإسم الدين يحترمون هذا الشخص ويصدقون أي شيء يقوله بدون مناقشة، أي أن هذه الادعاءات ستكون محل تصديق لهذه النوعية من الناس رغم عدم وجود أساس لها.

أنا شخصيا قلت رأيي بوضوح في عمودين سابقين:

- بعد الاختطاف تحدثت عن عدم وجود أمن للسفير.
- بعد أن تم قتله، علقت بهذا الكلام.

They killed the Egyptian ambassador in Iraq… they wanted to send a message to all regimes in Arab countries.

I would certainly like to hear what will the Egyptian and Arab masses say about this, especially that the majority either supports or show sympathy towards the terrorists in their operations against American troops, Iraqi troops, or even civilians (especially when they are in line at an army or police recruitment center).

I am sure many of them will say it’s Egypt’s mistake because it shouldn’t have recognized the new Iraqi government and shouldn’t have sent an ambassador because of the American occupation. Some of them may even say the terrorists had every right to kidnap kill the ambassador. Hey, and some will think of the usual worst-case scenario: if the terrorists were wrong in killing him, then he died as a martyr and will be in heaven… so no big deal anyway. Oh, and I don’t want to forget those who will say he was killed as a result of an American-Israeli conspiracy that was executed by the Israeli intelligence (Mossad)!!!

In short, I don’t think this will change anyone’s mentality. But of course I think Egypt’s only mistake is sending an ambassador without guards, like I said before in this post.

قتلوا السفير المصري في العراق... أرادوا أن يرسلوا رسالة قوية إلى الأنظمة الحاكمة في الدول العربية.

أنا أود أن أسمع ما ستقوله الجموع المصرية والعربية في هذا الموضوع، خصوصا أن الأغلبية تؤيد أو تبدي تعاطفها باتجاه الارهابيين في العمليات التي يقومون بها ضد الأمرييكيين والأجانب، وقوات الشرطة والجيش العراقي، وحتى ضد المدنيين العراقيين، خصوصا إذا كانوا واقفين في طوابير مراكز التطوع في الشرطة والجيش العراقي.

أنا متأكد ان الكثير من هؤلاء الناس سيقولون أن هذه غلطة مصر لأنها لم يكن ينبغي أن ترسل بسفيرها إلى العراق، ولم يكن ينبغي أن تعترف بالحكومة العراقية من أصله، بسبب الاحتلال الأمريكي. بل وسيقول البعض أن الارهابيين كان لديهم الحق بأن يخطفوا السفير ويقتلوه. وبالمرة ستجد من يقول لك أنه إذا كان الارهابيون (أو المقاومة المشروعة من وجهة نظرهم) إذا كانوا أخطئوا هذه المرة عندما قتلوا السفير، فإنه قد مات شهيدا وسيكون مصيره الجنة... يعني مافيش مشكلة في جميع الأحوال. آه... لا أريد أن أنسى أيضا من سيقول أن قتل السفير هو نتيجة مؤامرة إسرائيلية-أمريكية قام بتنفيذها جهاز الموساد الاسرائيلي!!!

باختصار، ماحدث لن يغير عقلية أي شخص أو أسلوب تفكيره. أنا بالطبع أعتقد أن الخطأ الوحيد الذي ارتكبته مصر في هذا الموضوع هو عدم إتخاذ اجراءات حماية وحراسة للسفير، كما ذكرت سابقا في هذه المقالة.

A court ruling in Egypt will allow female TV hosts or presenters to wear veils (hijab) while presenting on TV.

Judging from what I have watched and heard on Egyptian TV channels and programs in the past, hosts are usually selected based on who they know or who they are related to in the Egyptian TV, and also on how they look. Of course, they don’t hire those who wear veils.

The hosts in this trial were not veiled at the beginning of their careers in Egyptian TV, but when they started wearing them, they were prevented from hosting shows and were assigned other responsibilities.

The court considered this a form of discrimination against those hosts, and a violation of their constitutional rights. No mention, however, of women rights not to be pressured into wearing veils by their families and husbands in certain communities in Egypt, or the right of young children (such as 10 years olds) not to be made to wear veils by their parents. Also, no guarantees were given to those who wear veils that they will not be frowned upon or rejected if they one day chose to stop wearing their veils.

حكم القضاء المصري مؤخرا بأحقية مقدمات البرامج المحجبات بارتداء الحجاب أثناء تقديم البرامج في التليفزيون.

بناءا على ما رأيته على التليفزيون المصري من برامج، أستطيع أقول أن مقدمات البرامج يتم اختيارهم طبقا لصلة قرابتهم أو لمعرفتهم بأشخاص يعملون في التليفزيون (مذيعات قدامى مثلا)، أو على أساس (الشكل). بالطبع، لا يتم اختيار المحجبات لوظيفة المذيعة. المذيعات في هذه القضيه لم يكونوا محجبات عندما بدأن العمل في التليفزيون، ولكن عندما أصبحن محجبات تم تغيير مسؤلياتهن بحيث لايظهرن على الشاشة.

المحكمة اعتبرت ما فعله التليفزيون نوع من التفرقة ضد هؤلاء المذيعات، ومخالفة لحقوقهن الدستورية. ولكن لم أسمع شيء عن حق المرأة بأن لا يتم الضغط عليها لارتداء الحجاب من قبل عائلتها أو زوجها في بعض المناطق أو العائلات في مصر، أو حق الأطفال في سن 10 سنوات مثلا بأن لا تلبسهم عائلاتهم الحجاب. أيضا، لم تعطى أي ضمانات لأي امرأة محجبة تقرر التوقف عن ارتداء الحجاب بأن لا ينظر الناس لها (خصوصا عائلتها أو زوجها) بنظرات الشك أو عدم الاحترام، وهذا الكلام من الواقع.

I am sure most people know about the kidnapping of the Egyptian ambassador to Iraq after about a month of his arrival their. It also comes after less than a week after Ahmad Abul Ghait (Egypt’s foreign minister) said that Egypt opposes an early US withdrawal from Iraq, because of the chaos that will follow.
About a year ago, an official in the Egyptian embassy in Baghdad was kidnapped after Ahmad Nazif (Egypt’s prime minister) said that Egypt is willing to help in training the Iraqi police.

When will they learn that just because Egyptian officials in Iraq are not American, it won’t save them from being killed or kidnapped? And when will they learn that just because that country speaks the same language, it doesn’t mean the embassy officials will be safe.

It looks to me like Ahmad Nazif and Ahmad Abul Ghait have two choices… either spend some money on protecting their envoys by assigning guards, or they could end their statements about Iraq (in other words to shut up). Of course I would choose the first, I can’t understand how can a foreign ambassador in a country like Iraq move around without protection, the kidnapped Egyptian ambassador was alone in his car when he was kidnapped!

أكيد أغلب الناس سمعوا عن خطف السفير المصري في العراق بعد شهر من وصوله هناك. حادثة الاختطاف تأتي أيضا بعد حوالي اسبوع من تصريح أحمد أبو الغيط (وزير الخارجية المصري) بأن مصر تعارض إنسحاب أمريكي مبكر من العراق لما سيحدثه ذلك من فوضى شاملة في البلد.
من حوالي سنة، أحد المسئولين في السفارة المصرية في العراق نم اختطافه بعد أن أعلن أحمد نظيف (رئيس الوزراء المصري) أن مصر لديها استعداد أن تساهم في تدريب قوات البوليس العراقية.

متى سيتعلم المسئولين في مصر أن كون مسئولي السفارة المصرية من غير الأمريكان لن ينقذهم من القتل والخطف؟ ومتى سيفهمون أن لمجرد أن العراق هي دولة يتحدث شعبها بنفس اللغة (العربية) لا يعني أن المسئولين المصريين سيكونون بأمان في ذلك البلد؟

في رأيي أن أحمد نظيف وأحمد أبو الغيط لديهم خيارين... إما صرف بعد الأموال لحماية المسئولين المصريين بالعراق عن طريق إضافة الحراسه المناسبه، أو أن يتوقفوا عن الإدلاء بتصريحات تتعلق بالعراق (يتخرسوا يعني). أنا أفضل الخيار الأول بالطبع، فأنا لا أفهم كيف يكون هناك سفير أجنبي في دولة مثل العراق بدون حراسة... فالسفير المصري الذي تم خطفه كان وحيدا في سيارته أثناء عملية الاختطاف!

Nour Trial Development on June 30 تطور في محاكمة نور في 30 يونية

This is my 3^rd post about Nour’s trial. I will quote NY Times for the latest significant development:

“The government forgery case against Ayman Nour, the most determined opposition figure challenging President Hosni Mubarak in this September's election, suffered a serious blow today when a key defendant reversed his guilty plea. The defendant, Ayman Ismael Hassan Al-Refai, claimed that he had confessed to helping Mr. Nour forge signatures only because state security agents threatened to harm his two nieces. In addition, lawyers for the defendant alleged that the police had offered to wipe out his previous, unspecified criminal record if he cooperated in the case against Mr. Nour.

The judge, without commenting, announced a delay in the trial until July 6.”

The complete article can be read here. All I can say is that this kind of treatment, be it threatening to hurt you or someone you know, physical and psychological torture, or humiliation, is a common way of dealing with suspects or even witnesses by the different branches of the interior ministry, from regular police to state security. I did not find anything surprising or unusual when I read the article.

هذه ثالث مرة أكتب عن قضية أيمن نور. سأنقل ما ذكرته صحيفة نيويورك تايمز، وهو نفس ما قيل في مصادر إخبارية مصرية ودولية:

"قضية التزوير المقدمة من الحكومة ضد أيمن نور، أكثر شخصيات المعارضة إصرارا على منافسة الرئيس حسني مبارك في انتخابات سبتمبر، عانت اليوم من ضربة خطيرة عندما تراجع متهم رئيسي عن اعترافه بالجريمة. هذا المتهم واسمه أيمن اسماعيل حسن الرفاعي، قال أنه اعترافه في السابق بمساعدة أيمن نور على تزوير التوقيعات كان بسبب تهديد ضباط أمن الدولة له بإيذاء إبنتي أخوه/أخته. كما قال محامو المتهم أن الشرطة عرضت عليه تنظيف سجل السوابق الخاص به لو تعاون في القضية ضد أيمن نور.

القاضي أعلن تأجيل القضية لجلسة 6 يوليو، بدون أن يعلق."

يمكنك قراءة المقاله بكاملها هنا. كل ما أستطيع قوله في هذا الموضوع هو أن هذه النوعية من المعاملة، سواء التهديد بإيذاء الشخص أو أقاربه ومعارفه، والتعذيب الجسدي والنفسي، والإهانه، هي معاملة معتادة في التعامل مع المتهمين أو حتى الشهود في فروع وزارة الداخلية المختلفة، سواء كانت أقسام شرطة أو مباحث أمن دولة. أنا لم أجد شيء غريب أو غير معتاد عندما قرأت هذا الخبر.

First day of Nour trial أول يوم في محاكمة نور

The first day in Ayman Nour’s trial… nothing but a charade. The picture above shows the amount of security surrounding the courthouse where Ayman Nour is being tried. That’s right, somewhere between 1000 to 3000 police soldiers surrounded the courthouse yesterday and the roads were blocked. The yellow arrows point at the lines and crowds of police soldiers. Any person you see in the picture that is wearing black or white is a police officer. Any vehicle that looks green or blue is a police vehicle. Even the defendant and his lawyers were refused admission to the court at the beginning, not to mention the reporters.

By the way, the Judge overseeing the case is the same judge who sentenced Saad Eddin Ibrahim to jail few years ago, after he exposed the usual forging of parliamentary elections in Egypt. Coincidence? And after all this the regime is still claiming the trial is criminal and not political! Criminal trial my ass.

اليوم الأول في محاكمة أيمن نور...ما هي إلا مهزلة. الصورة اللي فوق دي بتبين أعداد عساكر الشرطة اللي حاصروا المحكمة... ما بين 1000 و 3000 عسكري والشوارع قفلوها كمان. الأسهم الصفراء بتشاور على طوابير وتجمعات الأمن.

Nour Stands Trial بدأ محاكمة نور

A new episode in the conflict between Mubarak's regime and the opposition. It is time for Ayman Nour to stand trial on allegations of forging supporters’ signatures during the process of creating a new political party, Al-Ghad Party. Ayman Nour also happens to be a main leader of opposition against Mubarak’s regime (coincidence?) The Egyptian government is still claiming the trial is criminal, not political.

On June 16^th I mentioned the possibility of signing the gas pipeline agreement between Egypt and Israel (click here for that post) as mentioned in YnetNews. Few days later the agreement was indeed signed between the two countries after a decade of negotiations. The signing occurred during a visit by Egypt’s intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, to Israel. Here is a link for YnetNews article about the signing, this will piss off the anti-peace masses in the Middle East, but it will be a benefiting project for both countries, and will set an example for the rest of the region. Congratulations!

ذكرت يوم 16 يونية احتمال توقيع اتفاقية الغاز الطبيعي بين مصر واسرائيل كما ذكر موقع يديعوت أحرونوت. بعدها ببضعة أيام تم بالفعل التوقيع على الاتفاق بعد حوالي عقد من المفاوضات والمعوقات. التوقيع كان أثناء زيارة عمر سليمان (مدير المخابرات) لإسرائيل. هذه الاتفاقية سوف تغضب جموع أعداء التطبيع وأعداء السلام في الشرق الأوسط، ولكنه سيكون مشروع مفيد للبلدين، وسيكون مثال ودرس جيد لبقية الدول في المنطقة. مبروك!

Shobra Demonstration مظاهرة شبرا

Demonstrations against the regime in Egypt are continuing and the latest was a large demonstration in Shobra, a neighborhood north of Cairo. The demonstration took place in Shobra Street, which I think is the main street in Shobra. I haven’t read about the number of protestors (let me know if you have), but looking at the pictures it seems to be in the hundreds range, which is relatively big. Below are some pictures and my opinion on how police reacted to the demonstration this time.

المظاهرات ضد نظام الحكم في مصر مستمرة، وآخرها كانت مظاهرة في شبرا، شمال القاهرة. المظاهرة كانت في شارع شبرا، الشارع الرئيسي في حي شبرا على حد علمي. أنا لم أقرأ عن عدد المشاركين (قولولي لو كنتم تعرفوا)، ولكن واضح من الصور أن المشاركين كانوا عدة مئات، وهو عدد كبير نسبيا. بالأسفل بعض الصور ورأيي في أسلوب تعامل قوات البوليس مع هذه المظاهرة.

This time police focused on organizing traffic in the street, while the bulk of the interior ministry forces and their riot police stayed away and behind the scenes. This of course is totally different than what happened in previous demonstrations, which included arrests, chasing people who are taking photos to confiscate their cameras, and assaulting the demonstrators and ripping their clothes off (see this article by Mona Eltahawy for her opinion about that).

This change of demonstration handling by the interior ministry occurs at a time when the regime is facing growing local and foreign pressure to take steps towards freedom and democracy in the country. Although Mubarak and top officials are still denying the regime is facing any kind of foreign pressure, it is clear to anyone with a brain that the USA specifically is pushing the case for democracy in Egypt, Especially during Condoleeza Rice’s visit to Egypt this week. I wish Mubarak would say the truth about this for a change; he really needs some respect from the Egyptian people these days. (See this article for more about Rice’s visit to Egypt).

Whether what happened in Shobra demonstration is only a temporary tactic by the interior ministry to enhance its image, or an understanding of the new reality created by the people of Egypt and foreign pressure, I believe the Egyptian people need to take advantage of this opportunity and further increase their demand for freedom and democracy, when this door is open it will be almost impossible to be closed again by the regime.

هذه المرة الشرطة ركزت على تنظيم المرور أثناء مرور المظاهرة في الشارع، أما قوات وزارة الداخلية ومن ضمنها قوات مكافحة الشغب وقفت بعيدا ولم تكن ظاهرة. هذا الأسلوب بالطبع يختلف تماما عما حصل في السابق، عندما حصلت اعتقالات، واصطياد الأشخاص الذين كانوا يصورون المظاهرات والاستيلاء على كاميراتهم، والاعتداء على المتظاهرين وتجريدهم من ملابسهم كما هو معروف.

هذا التغيير في أسلوب التعامل مع المظاهرات من قبل وزارة الداخلية يحدث في وقت يواجه فيه نظام الحكم المصري ضغوطا متنامية داخلية وخارجية من أجل اتخاذ خطوات باتجاه المزيد من الديموقراطية والحرية في مصر. بالرغم أن مبارك وكبار المسئولين في الحكومة ما زالوا ينكرون وقوع أي ضغط خارجي، أعتقد أنه من الواضح لأي شخص يستخدم عقله أن هناك بالفعل ضغوط خارجية (وبالتحديد من الولايات المتحدة) لتطوير الديموقراطية في مصر، وخصوصا أثناء زيارة كوندوليزا رايس الأخيرة لمصرخلال هذا الاسبوع. أتمنى أن يقول مبارك الحقيقة وأن لا ينفي أنه واقع تحت ضغوط خارجية، فقول الحقيقة قد يمنح مبارك القليل من الاحترام من الشعب المصري، وهو مايحتاجه بشده هذه الأيام.

سواء كان ماحدث من البوليس في شبرا هو مجرد مناورة مؤقتة من وزارة الداخلية لتحسين صورة النظام المصري، أو فهم حقيقي للواقع والمتغيرات الجديدة التي خلقها الشعب المصري والضغوط الأجنبية، أنا أعتقد أن المصريين يجب أن يستغلوا هذه الفرصة ويزيدوا مطالبتهم للحرية والديموقراطية، حيث أن هذا الباب الجديد الذي تم فتحه سيكون من المستحيل تقريبا أن يتم إغلاقه مرة أخرى من قبل النظام.

I think it could be good if you want to find news about Egypt, or if you are interested in finding news sources.

It turned out that Palestinian prisoners are the ones who mishandled Quran in an Israeli prison and claimed it was mishandled by prison guards. They did so in order to spark and demonstrations among the Muslim populations in Israel this time. Photos of those torn Qurans were seen in some news articles when the issue surfaced, and Islamic Jihad group said that the photos were sent to them by cell phones of the Palestinian prisoners?? The Qurans, by the way, were provided for the prisoners by the Israeli jail. Here is a quote from the article: "According to the Prison Service, prisoner representatives apologized for the incident, saying it was a Hamas-affiliated minority that carried out the act" (I had a wrong link earlier, I corrected it).

يبدو أن من قام بتمزيق نسخ من القرآن في السجن الاسرائيلي هم سجناء فلسطينيين، وليس حراس اسرائيليين كما ادعى هؤلاء السجناء سابقا. يبدو أن السجناء قاموا بفعل ذلك لخلق سبب للمظاهرات وزيادة الكراهية ضد اسرائيل في العالم الاسلامي، أو لابتزاز إدارة السجن. صور القرآن الممزق كانت ظهرت في بعض المقالات عندما بدأت المشكلة، وقالت جماعة الجهاد الاسلامي(1) أن الصور تم ارسالها عن طريق التليفون المحمول الخاص بالسجناء؟؟ نسخ القرآن هذه، بالمناسبة، توفرها السجون الاسرائيلية للسجناء بشكل طبيعي. وهذا جزء من المقال: "طبقا لخدمة السجون، قام ممثلون عن السجناء الفلسطينيين بالاعتذار عن الحادثة، وقالوا أن من قام بذلك هم مجموعة صغيرة من حماس"(2).

Of course, you don’t hear about this in the Arab media, nor will you hear any Muslim cleric asking the Palestinians to apologize for their actions. It is the same old story: I would like to hear the outcry of those who protested after the news reports of mishandling Quran in Gitmo, or when the Palestinian prisoners claimed that the Israeli guards were the ones who mishandled it. Al-Azhar, the most important Islamic entity in Egypt, was offended when Condoleeza Rice refused to meet Azhar religious officials to “apologize” for news reports about mishandling Quran in Gitmo, but apparently those Azhar sheikhs were drunk when the news came out about Palestinians mishandling their Quran, their own holly book, so they said nothing about the crime this time!

بالطبع، لن تسمع أي إدانة لهذه التصرفات من قبل الفلسطينيين أو الاعلام العربي، ولن تجد أي رجل دين مسلم يدين هذه الحادثة ويطلب من الفلسطينيين الاعتذار. أنا شخصيا أريد أن أرى نفس الغضب والمظاهرات التي حدثت عندما نشرت تقارير عن الاساءة للقرآن في سجن جوانتانامو، أو عندما ادعى السجناء الفلسطيينيون وحركة الجهاد الاسلامي أن حراس السجن الاسرائييليون هم من قاموا بالاساءة للقرآن. شيوخ الأزهر، أهم مؤسسة اسلامية في مصر، شعروا بالإهانة عندما امتنعت كوندوليزا رايس عن زيارة الأزهر لتقديم "الاعتذار" عندما ظهرت التقارير عن الاساءة للقرأن في سجن جوانتانامو. ولكن يبدو أن شيوخ الأزهر كانوا سكارى عندما قام الفلسطينيون بتمزيق قرآنهم بنفسهم، فلم يقم أي منهم بإدانة الجريمة هذه المرة!

Kaddoumi's Statement - بيان القدومي

According to an Ahram article, Farouk Kaddoumi, the head of the Central Committee of Fatah movement, referred to some of the recent actions of armed gangs belonging to “resistance” groups in the Palestinian territories by saying that shooting and terrorizing Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip is not a part of the Palestinian “struggle”! (Yes, that is what “resistance” groups do these days).
He says that the people who do this give a bad image to the Palestinian people and the Palestinian resistance, and make people wonder about the reason behind those actions, at the time that Israel is preparing to withdraw from Gaza strip due to what he called “courageous resistance”.
He called on those who carry weapons to preserve the “honor and decency of the resistance”, and to respect the sanctity of judiciary and courts, and to stop wrongdoings against judges and lawyers.

But I think that Kaddoumi, who was thought of as a possible Arafat successor in the past, did not have the courage, or perhaps enough wit, to include in his list of wrongdoings by the Palestinian groups other kinds of attacks against civilian Israeli targets, including bombing towns and settlements with Qassam rockets, and smuggling weapons and explosives across the border with Israel, not to mention their long history of bombing buses and restaurants.
All of these actions threaten advances in the peace process, gives clear legitimacy to retaliation by Israeli forces, and affects the reputation of current Palestinian government. These types of actions by Palestinian groups are the main reasons for not having peace between Israel and the Palestinian until this day, and they have a clear negative impact on the daily life of Palestinians.
I hope that Palestinian leaders, in addition to what they do behind the scenes, will have the courage to aggressively and continuously address this issue and explain it to their people in public.

ولكن ما أعتقده هو أن قدومي، الذي كان مرشحا لخلافة عرفات في الماضي، لم يمتلك الشجاعة أو الذكاء ليذكر أيضا جرائم أخرى لهذه الجماعات بالاضافة لما يحدث في الأراضي الفلسطينية،زمن ضمنها الهجمات ضد الأهداف المدنية الاسرائيلية عبر ضرب المدن والمستعمرات بصواريخ القسام، وتهريب الأسلحة والمتفجرات عبر الحدود مع اسرائيل، بالإضافة الى التاريخ المعروف من ضرب المطاعم والأوتوبيسات بالقنابل.
كل هذه التصرفات تهدد أي تقدم في عملية السلام وتعطي شرعية واضحة لردود عسكرية اسرائيلية ، بالإضافة لوضع القيادة الفلسطينية في وضع حرج. هذه النوعية من العمليات هي السبب الرئيسي لتوقف أو بطأ عملية السلام واستمرارها لهذا اليوم، وما يترتب عليها من آثار على الحياة اليومية للشعب الفلسطيني.
أرجو أن تمتلك القيادات الفلسطينية الشجاعة الكافية للتعرض لمثل هذه المواضيع بشكل قوي ومستمر، وشرح النتائج المترتبة على كل ذلك للشعب الفلسطيني، وليس فقط التفاوض بشكل سري مع هذه الجماعات.

YnetNews, the online version of the Israeli newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth", had an article yesterday about the gas pipeline project between Egypt and Israel. I have been hearing about this project for several years now (negotiations, objection from many Egyptians, etc...) , but the article said there is a good chance of signing an agreement during Omar Suleiman's visit to Israel this week (he is the chief of intelligence in Egypt). The project would create a pipeline from Egypt to Israel that would facilitate exporting Egypt's natural gas to Israel, 2.2 billion cubic meters annually for the next 20 years. The deal is worth about $2.5 billion.

After reading the article, I thought about the whole situation between Egypt and Israel. On the Egyptian side, the problem is those who refuse anything that has anything to do with Israel, including even having their ambassador in our country, they even consider those who deal with Israel as traitors and agents. These people include parliament members, journalists and media people, and many Egyptians who are fueled by Arab-speaking media coverage of daily events in Israel and Palestinian territories, which is designed to increase the hate rather than present the truth. Many, if not most Egyptians, consider fighting Israel a national and religious duty.

بعد قراءة المقال، بدأت أفكر في مجمل الموقف مابين مصر واسرائيل. بالنسبة للطرف المصري، المشكلة تكمن في من يرفضون أي علاقات أو اتصالات مع اسرائيل، أو حتى وجود السفير الاسرائيلي في مصر، بل ويعتبرون أن من يتعامل مع اسرائيل هم من طائفة "الخونة والعملاء". هؤلاء الرافضين من ضمنهم أعضاء في البرلمان، صحفيين وكتاب واعلاميين، وأيضا الكثير من أفراد الشعب المتأثرين بالتغطية اليومية للاعلام الناطق بالعربية حول الاحداث في اسرائيل والمناطق الفلسطينية، التغطية المصممة لزيادة الكراهية بدلا من تقديم الحقيقة. الكثير من المصريين، ان لم يكن أغلبهم، يعتبرون الحرب مع اسرائيل واجب قومي وديني

But what I don't understand is: why is Mubarak's regime hesitant to improve political, cultural, and economical relations with Israel, even though such improvement will have a positive impact on the regime's image in the west, benefit the country economically, and will slowly teach the people the importance of forgetting the hate of the past, beginning to live in the present, and hoping for the future? What is preventing the regime from doing so? Is the reason pressure from the people? I don't think so; Mubarak’s regime always had the ability to improve the relations with Israel without serious trouble locally (like the QIZ agreement, for example).
Is it because of the conflict between Israel and other countries in the area like Syria and the Palestinian territories (they want to stand with there "brothers")? I don't know, but away from what is said the Arab-speaking media, Mubarak’s regime knows very well the true causes of the continuation of the conflict until this day (and believe me when I say it is not Egypt's fault that most of the countries in the region haven't made peace with Israel yet).

ولكن ما لا أفهمه هو لماذا يتردد نظام مبارك في تطوير العلاقات السياسية والثقافية والاقتصادية مع الجانب الاسرائيلي، رغم أن هذه العلاقات سيكون لها أثر ايجابي على سمعة النظام المصري في الغرب، وستفيد الدولة اقتصاديا، وستعلم الناس بالتدريج أهمية ترك كراهية الماضي، والبدأ في العيش في الحاضر، والتطلع للمستقبل. ما الذي يمنع نظام مبارك من فعل ذلك؟ هل السبب هو الضغط الشعبي؟ لا أعتقد. نظام الحكم كان دائما لديه الفرصة لتطوير العلاقات مع اسرائيل بدون أن يواجه مشاكل ضخمة في الداخل (اتفاقية الكويز مثلا). هل السبب هو الصراع بين اسرائيل وأطراف أخرى كسوريا والفلسطينيين (وقفة "أخوية")؟ لا أعلم، ولكن بعيدا عما نسمعه ونقرأه في الاعلام الناطق بالعربية، نظام مبارك يعرف جيدا الاسباب الحقيقية لاستمرار الصراع لهذا اليوم - وصدقوني عندما أقول أنه ليس ذنب مصر أن أغلب الدول في المنطقة لم تحقق السلام مع اسرائيل حتى اليوم

Many people in Egypt including myself (although we are not the majority in Egypt due to many reasons, including the media which I mentioned earlier), believe that it is in the best interest of the country and the region to improve the relations with Israel. I don't want the Egypt to support or be courteous to a regime like Assad's regime in Syria. I want the country to support itself. And I don’t want Egypt’s interests to coincide with the interests of groups in the Palestinian territories like Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Rather, I want our interests to coincide with the interests of the moderates in the region. I want Egypt to be the wakeup call for the rest of the Middle East countries, especially those who are still at war with Israel.

أنا وكثير من الناس في مصر (رغم أننا لا نمثل الاغلبية لاسباب كثيرة ذكرت منها الإعلام) نعتقد أن تطوير العلاقات مع اسرائيل يصب في مصلحة البلد والمنطقة بأكملها. أنا لا أريد مصر أن تجامل أو تدعم نظام الأسد في سوريا مثلا. أنا أريد أن تدعم البلد نفسها. ولا أريد أن تتوافق مصالحنا مع جماعات في الاراضي الفلسطينية مثل حماس والجهاد الاسلامي. بل أريد أن تتوافق مصالحنا مع مصالح المعتدلين في المنطقة. أريد أن تكون مصر هي جرس الاستيقاظ (صحصحو يا عالم) لباقي دول الشرق الاوسط، وخصوصا الدول التي مازالت في حالة حرب مع اسرائيل

Mubarak's Adventures

Elaph news website talks about a British report which said that during last year, Mubarak has prevented a " palace coup", planned by the first lady, Suzanne Mubarak. According to the report, Suzanne wanted Mubarak to resign after winning the 5th election in the coming September, allowing the ruling party to choose their son, Gamal, as a successor. The writer of this report is a former Israeli Mossad officer called "Uzi Mahnaimi", who quotes Suzanne: "There are many wars, and my husband is away all the time. That is why I sacrificed all my life for my sons". He also predicts that Mubarak is afraid for his son's life if Gamal became president.

In other news, Aljazeera.net says that several wooden statues of Mubarak were very recently removed from the streets of Cairo. These statues showed Mubarak waving with his hand, and smiling. Under the statues it said "70 million Egyptians say yes to Mubarak" (Note: the population of Egypt is about 70 million). Aljazeera notes that the statues disappeared about a week before Condoleeza Rice's visit to Egypt, on June 20th. The article included 2 other examples of signs that were posted by Mubarak supporters: "Even the fetus inside its mother's belly says yes to Mubarak". Another one was "Yes to Mubarak, to his son, and to the son of his son", in a bold and presumptuous support to Gamal Mubarak succession of his father, and possibly to Gamal's son as well, many years from now.

An article in Alarabiya shows a photo of one of those things, about 3 meters (9 feet) in height, and has a circle of small bulb lights around Mubaraks head!

Reading that the statues were removed a week before Rice's visit, suddenly I thought of all the statues and signs of Saddam Hussain and Assad (father and son) in Iraq and Syria, which I have seen in the news. Are we any different in Egypt? I don't think the difference is significant - but they probably removed the statues to make Rice think that we are different.

The Gods of Hypocrisy

Several news websites stated that Samir Ragab, one of the main hypocrites in Egyptian media announced few days ago, that he will no longer continue to be the editor in chief of "Al-Gomhuria" (The Republic), one the main pro-government newspapers in Egypt. Samir Ragab is gone? I can't believe it - I always thought he is the god of hypocrisy. Also, Ibrahim Nafie, editor in chief of "Al-Ahram", the most popular pro-government paper in Egypt, will leave that position as well - according to what he said to his colleagues in a meeting.

Few days ago I came across a post in an Egyptian blog called "From Cairo with Love". This post talks about how Mohamed (the owner of that blog) receives e-mail quotes of Samir Ragab, sent by a friend of his to piss him off? He included one of those quotes in Arabic and English translation. To know exactly what we are talking about when we mention the name "Samir Ragab", here is my translation of that quote for Samir Ragab:

"Every time we see president Mubarak's visits to the sites of goodness, growth, and prosperity... we truly believe that mint water flows only from fountains that flows with freshness, clarity, and purity... He (president Mubarak) feeds those fountains with his mind, heart, thoughts, and faith. He is a leader that is rarely found in these times...

Those who carry the slogan of "Enough" (Kefaya), I tell them: It is enough that your self-hatred is more than your malice against those who are better than you in worthiness, ethics, and knowledge.

People of the “Enough” (Kefaya) slogan: Enough with your stupidness, naivety, and retardation.

As for Ibrahim Nafie, in 2000, I remember him calling those who demanded recalling the Egyptian ambassador in Israel as short-visioned individuals who know nothing about politics and the importance of having representation in Israel to keep an open line of communication. Of course, when Mubarak recalled the ambassador shortly after, suddenly everything changed, and recalling the ambassador became a wise political act that came exactly in the right time.

Another name that I would like to see it disappear is "Mohammed Abdul-Men'em", who is currently the editor in chief of "Rosa al Yousef", a magazine who was very rebellious until he became its chief. Not once did I see this person appear on TV screens without praising Mubarak and his eternal wisdom. In a recent article, he called the Egyptian opposition "dictatorial", because they did not like it when Larua Bush praised recent political developments in Egypt.

Needless to say, not once did I see any of these three individuals, Samir Ragab, Ibrahim Nafie, and Mohammed Abdul-Men'em, say any thing negative about Mubarak, and unfortunately, these are only 3 individuals in the middle of hundreds or thousands of journalists and media personnel who's main job is to enhance the image of Mubarak and the government in the eyes of the 70 million. Even though I don't expect much change (similar people may take their places and they still have other journalism/media related positions), it gives me great pleasure to hear this news.

The Fanatic Militia

As I was preparing something to post, symbols of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), which I have seen before, came to my mind. So I decided to put it here:

These are 2 similar symbols, as you can see, each of the symbols has a picture of the Quran, 2 swords, and a single word at the bottom. The one with the white background also has the phrase "Muslim Brothers", which is the exact translation of their Arabic name.

Any way, the word at the bottom says "and prepare". It is the beginning of a verse in Quran that talks about what Muslims should prepare for the enemy. The complete verse says "And prepare against them what force you can and horses tied at the frontier, to frighten thereby the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them, whom you do not know (but) Allah knows them".

And in addition to the detailed explanation that I found on the official website of the Egyptian branch of the movement (they are in many countries but the main one is in Egypt), I found a motto in the website of the Syrian branch, which translates to:

"Allah is our objective.
The prophet is our leader.
Quran is our law.
Jihad is our way.
Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope."

This motto, however, is in many websites that described the movement in Egypt, and is very consistent with how they describe themselves on their website, probably a standard motto for all the MB branches.

Now, my question is, why does a peaceful political group need 2 swords in its symbol and this verse that calls for war preparation? And do we want a political party that says "jihad is our way"? All of this seems to me like symbols and rules of a fanatic religious militia, not a political group. But unfortunately, the majority of the people here are addicted to this kind of agenda, as long as it comes in the name of religion.

I was hoping that my first post would be about Egypt, but here we go. I read in Alarabiya Arabic news site about what they called "summer marriage" in Saudi Arabia. What is that? When a Saudi travels outside the country during the summer months, they marry a Saudi from the opposite sex (usually a traveling man marries a woman), in order to have some "company" during the trip, and when they are back to Saudia, they terminate their marriage. The purpose of this, as some say, is for the man to protect himself from any kind of sexual encounters that they might think of having during their travel. This kind of marriage even received the approval of some Muslim clerics in Saudi Arabia, as it eliminates the need for "adultery" when a Saudi man travels abroad... he won't need to have sex with all the women he sees their, he has his summer wife with him!!

Of course, the pay is good. A woman got about $35,000, a BMW car, and a luxurious villa (house), which is within the average capability of Saudi business person (business man, in this case).

Are these people kidding themselves? Why not call things by their real name? What is the difference between this marriage and prostitution? And what prevents a marriage that will last for a week... or a single night... what will you call that?

But of course every thing here needs to be stamped by religious approval... including a sexual relation. Wanna have sex? Get married for the duration of your relationship. When you are done, terminate the marriage and pay what you have to pay. There you go. Halaal prostitution.
